My friend doesn't play that much anymore, ever since Throne and Liberty came out. She'd rather grind endlessly for hours there, as FFXIV's job design is so boring, she can't bring herself to login that much anymore. I had a 1,5 month break, recently resubbed like 3 days ago because there's still things I want to do in game, but also having started IT classes, in a way FFXIV provides me the "nothing too much to miss out on because patches come every 4 months".

I gave WoW a try and was kinda taken aback how well healers feel there. There's been other MMORPGs I've been trying but only FFXIV falls short in terms of combat and job design.

And because my friend no longer logs in, I'm back to being a lone wolf in the game.

    I’m in the same boat.
My static died, my friends don’t log in anymore since DT (since post EW some even) and I am the only one.

I actually keep thinking about trying out FFXI because the raid lit up my interest but I don’t know where to start or how good it is for a new player nowadays.

I did give FFXI a try as part of my free trial. There's this tingle of nostalgia. Combat might be slow (and tons of menus everywhere) but I had great fun exploring it.

FF11 is a pretty fun game if you can get past the slower more menu based combat and having to traverse the world slowly on first playthrough before unlocking homepoints and book warps. I feel each job in ff11 has its own uniqueness and has there own pro's and con's when using certain jobs for content and they all don't play or feel the same.

IDK when the last time you played FFXI was but the combat is a lot faster these days. Once you macro all of your abilities and get decent TP gear that allows you to spam weaponskills, there's very little downtime in combat. You can use unity warps to fast travel to a lot of places for the first time too.

FF11 is faster then it use to be but it still slow compared to modern games. Even if you use unity warps you still have to find your way to a zones homepoint/survival book to allow you to unlock permanent teleportation there and surrounding zones.

It is about longevity and replay value. As long as you had certain types of content, you didn't *need* additional content drops as often. Consider that chess hasn't had any new squares added to the board or new pieces with new moves in a hundred years, and it is still widely played?

There was a time when FFXIV had more content with longevity in its lineup, which is why people could keep playing through the months between patches doing various things without getting bored. Now, we have gone through a time where most of what has been coming out has been one-and-done's and raids that pretty much die in weeks set against a replenishment rate of months, and the last content with longevity has been long enough ago that even that has by now come to the point where people are done with that.

That is why the game that was able to become their most profitable product, now feels so much worse and is losing players.

Ironically I’d say XI is pretty much the polar opposite of XIV in every respect and that’s one of the strongest things about the game lol. It feels like an actual ‘ff rpg’ and not ‘action game with ff flavour’

That's what I like about ff11 it still feels like an mmo and a oldschool rpg with rpg elements.

Definitely agree. I feel like FFXI done a perfect job of creating an MMO that still felt faithful to the ‘traditional’ FF style. The result was weird to say the least, but I feel like that uniqueness was part of what made it so charming.

I feel like XIV has lost a lot of what made it ‘charming’ in favour of being more ‘visually appealing’. Like, it’s more about creating some bizarre kind of ‘cinematic mmo experience’ that’s entirely centered around aesthetics and graphical presentation, and not ‘making an FF game but it’s MMO form’ lol.
