This is especially unfun if you play with a controller (where Legacy is the default and the only really way to play). You have to wait for the mechanic to snapshot (which is when the heavy appears) and only then move back or else the game assumes you just turned (which is what happens when the press the movement stick back) around. This is (once again) a very controller unfriendly mechanic, esp with lag in mind.
I'm just glad that I usually play BRD and can cleanse myself of the Doom (the damage down isn't an issue in the fight).

I just resorted to using a movement ability as soon as the "1" disappears from the dice icon. As Reaper, I run to the edge so I don't hit anyone else with it and then use Hell's Egress to teleport backwards out of it at the last second.

Not sure if it's a difference in latency but moving as soon as the heavy debuff comes up seems to be too early for me. I've had the best results moving right as the timer above my head fizzes out

Well guess you better stop using legacy movement then.

If I remember correctly, legacy is the most used statistically. It is also, as stated above, the only valuable way to play on controller, hence all the console players out there. Devs just really need to dedicate some QA time on consoles, as the expansion based on your character progress client change is broken there too.

Funnily enough standard movement is also superior for dodging gazes on casters, because it allows you to turn your character while casting by just holding the right mouse button and rotating your camera.
You simply start your cast facing the boss and while casting you turn your camera with right mouse (which also turns your character), the cast still goes off while your model is looking away from the target.

You can actually do the same with legacy controls but it's a lot more finicky. You need to be in 1st person and you can only turn about 120° for the cast to still go off.

On the other hand legacy control is superior for dodging gazes on melees for a similar reason related to the camera. When strafing on legacy your character always turns to the direction your camera is facing, so you can simply look away from the boss and keep strafing left/right while doing your rotation and your character will always look away from the boss except for the split second where you execute an action.
So unless you happen to execute an action at the exact same millisecond the gaze snapshots you will never be hit by it while able keep your GCD rolling at all times.

This has been working for me, as long as I time it correctly and have Sprint available when my timer goes off! lol but I still fail it half the time.

Tech for Legacy Keyboard players - assuming A+D are your keys for moving sideways while facing forward (Strafe Left + Right), hold ASD all at once - that way you get the same backpedal that standard has pressing just S.

More button presses kinda, but it works like a charm.

Glad I'm not the only one frustrated over this. I haven't been back into the instance since my first attempt because I don't want to have to change a setting that I like for numerous reasons just to accommodate a poorly implemented mechanic.

If you play with Keyboard, read my comment above - you don't need to.

If you play with controller though, my condolences.
