If you play a job with some kind of gapcloser you can just use that the moment the debuff ends. Unfortunately Machinist is out of luck in that scenario.

This mechanic is a non-issue and you are over complicating it. PF is basically just having the people with marks going to the walls of the arena and facing outward (which you probably don't need to do that) while everyone else tucks in mid.
Then you dont have to care which way you are facing or where the mech is going.

If the mechanic hits you, though, you get Doom. And the complaint is that it's much more difficult to avoid being hit by your own marker AoE with legacy movement because you can't backstep out of it.This mechanic is a non-issue and you are over complicating it. This is what literally you read about why legacy is better, you bind strafe to a/d, you dont need this "fancy" go left/right movement. Press s + mouse buttons + wiggle camera to avoid gaze, walk back slowly with asd. This is interesting to learn, thank you! It doesn't solve my problem easily, as I don't have either "strafe left" or "strafe right" bound to keys. There is normally no need for them with legacy movement, and I wanted to free up Q and E for other buttons. I may look to see if I have some distant keys that I am not using, though, and try to make it work with that.
Why don't you just face the AoE out of the arena, turn your camera towards the boss and press W to dodge it? Walking backwards isn't required for this. Slow-walking backwards is the reason why legacy is superior in the first place, because you don't do it.
Since you get debuffed with Heavy when the hand spawns on you, it leaves very little room for error in moving the correct way to dodge.
From my time doing it I found that slow walking backwards works fine in dodging the back hand, didn't seem like the Heavy debuff made me walk any slower.
But you know which way to dodge long before the hand spawns, so it's not like you need to figure anything out when it happens. You just move right as the 1 (the die) disappears and you'll never get doom that way.Since you get debuffed with Heavy when the hand spawns on you, it leaves very little room for error in moving the correct way to dodge.

It's just easier to be already moving in the direction you need to be before the timer reaches 0 imo. Having to move just as the timer reaches 0 just seems like it would be more difficult for higher ping players, just as the OP says aswell.

I don't know this mechanic yet, but I had similar problems during thordan ex when he makes the pillars where you have to stand in while having to dodge the gaze, and if you need to reposition for the aoe on the ground, you may temporarily face thordan, which is not good.
For these brief moments I usually just enter first person perspective on controller, then you are back in standard movement set, you can walk backwards despise being in legacy controls.
Ideally, they should let us make a macro to toggle it.
I use legacy camera and I'm having no issues with it... I personally never enjoyed Standard Camera, I don't know if that mechanic is easier with it, I know one mechanic that was hard (for me) was in DRS when there was a specific way you had to face something and you had to be precise or you'd get cleaved? (not sure what exactly it was it has been years) it was the uh...chess pieces??? or something bosses, the multiple armored ones with the bombs.
Claw Infront (backwards), turn your character to FACE outside, turn camera around and press W when you start getting slowed. (claw will appear infront of your character)
Claw Behind (forwards), your back is against the wall/edge, press W (claw will appear behind your character)
But yeah it'd be nice if we can toggle it. I remember in DRS that mechanic I couldn't do and had to switch my settings midfight for it...
