A mechanic in Chaotic is much harder with legacy movement than standard

This post contains small mechanical spoilers for the first phase of the new chaotic raid, so please avoid reading it if that is something you don't want to see.

It is still the first day, so I may be misunderstanding the mechanic, but it feels like the Dark Hand Grasp mechanic is much more difficult with legacy movement than it would be with standard movement. This is not usually the case with movement-based mechanics, as far as I have ever noticed, so this is a little bit disappointing.

There are two versions of the mechanic, decided when she creates tethers to your character. If her palm is facing outwards while she is casting, you will spawn a damaging area behind your character when the countdown ends. If you get the version of the mechanic where her palm is facing upwards when she tethers to you, you will spawn a damaging area in the direction your character is looking when the countdown ends. Let's call the first version "forward" and the second version "backward".

It seems to me that the intended solution here is that, if you get the "forward" version of the mechanic, you should walk forwards continuously while the debuff is expiring. This means that whenever it goes off, you'll walk out of it. I believe that the intended solution for the "backward" version is just the reverse: walk backwards continuously while the debuff is expiring.

The problem is, with legacy movement it is not possible to walk backwards. Your character will always face in the direction that it is moving.

I think that the zone locks in briefly before the countdown actually expires. This means that with very careful timing I think it is possible to do the "backward" version with legacy movement. However I think that it is substantially more difficult than it would be with standard movement.

I do not know if it is possible to adjust this mechanic in a way that makes it more fair for players with different settings. I just wanted to give feedback that this feels unfair. I think the game normally does an excellent job with its mechanics of not making one or the other feel better or worse, so this is an unusual miss.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, thank you

I didn't realize it changed tbh. I thought it was just snapshotting the location of the AoE prior to the countdown causing me to run into it, but maybe that explains why I ran into it sometimes.

To move backwards without turning, hold backwards + strafe left + strafe right. For me this is S+Q+E.

    I 100% agree with this!

If the hand spawns behind and you must move the character forwards, its really easy.
If the hand spawns in front and you must move backwards with legacy, you must move precisely when the debuff vanish. If you are too early, you walk right into it. Too late ofc it gets you.

The difference to solve each variants of this mech with legacy movement is big.

If this mechanic must be precisely executed in both variants, then okay, but it isnt.

They just need to give the variant where you have to move backwards maybe a second more to resolve I think.
The AOE behind is ok but the AOE in front where you have to move can be quite annoying with how the snapshooting works.

Probably doesn't help that the mechanic was designed with jp ping in mind either.

Legacy movement + east coast ping/lag. The number of times I've been snapshotted is ridiculous.

This is interesting to learn, thank you! It doesn't solve my problem easily, as I don't have either "strafe left" or "strafe right" bound to keys. There is normally no need for them with legacy movement, and I wanted to free up Q and E for other buttons. I may look to see if I have some distant keys that I am not using, though, and try to make it work with that.

I've not looked into the new chaotic raid but I know standard is already better than legacy when it comes to "character facing" mechanics. Like dodging eyes. Especially for casters. With standard you can rotate in place to dodge an eye attack without interrupting cast. With legacy it is just not possible.

Inputnamehere I think that's just a matter of taste as to what you do / don't find difficult. I like **legacy** keybinds for dodging gazes, since it's extremely easy to pivot to a single direction just by tapping one of my movement keys, and I can easily look away from the boss with my character without having to turn my camera to the outside of the stage.

I had issue with this, now I just face the outside of the arena and use the gap closer to move to boss.
