They are not owed your time... unless you queue for a duty and commit said time. Because if you leave, you have wasted their time. As I explained earlier, 40 minutes of my time was wasted the day that happened to me.

    Exactly this.

I am over it but it's important to remember and reflect on your experiences when trying to relate to, empathize and agree with people, as I am doing with the OP.
Firstly, most of the duties in this game can be done with an NPC party so getting stuck in the MSQ is less of an issue than ever.
Not for trials, and it'll be a long time before they get through the sidequest dungeons at this rate.
Second, it's not even prime time and I queued for the final steps of faith instantly AS A DPS
You're right. It's faster to queue for duties now in most cases, because the general population of the game was lower in Heavensward. Nevertheless, the argument that tank queues are instant is only true for roulettes and does not apply in the slightest for direct queues, and never has. Everyone just forgets this point because they are used to roulettes.
pulling up an example from almost a decade ago as a reason this should be implemented is stupid. Legitimately stupid.
I wouldn't have this issue now. You know why? Because I'm through the MSQ and the only duties I direct queue for are current content. But that isn't necessarily the case for new players, so the only way for me to relate is to remember when I was a new player.

The fact you brought it up and want to punish people for a non-issue that happened 8 years ago means you're not over it. Get over it. The trial you're using as an example doesn't even exist in the game anymore. That's how dumb this is.

It's more that I think people should be punished for it in the future. It's also not a non-issue; it has the capability to drive away players and any MMORPG's goal is to reduce pain points for new players to increase retention.

They solved the issue by removing the entire fight from trial roulettes. Now you don't gotta worry about those poor poor sprouts who'd be getting instant-queues nowadays anyway. Now get over it.

    Edit:
I swear, 'increase player retention', coming from someone who didn't even quit when it happened to him and continued to play the game. Hogwash. Argue the merit of the argument itself, not based on some immeasurable idea like "player retention". What if they implemented a change where they didn't even get a 30 minute timeout, and removed any penalty at all, and it turned out that player retention actually got higher? Does that mean you'd be all for it? Are you that invested in Square Enix's stock price that you want them to keep all the players they can, regardless of what boneheaded decisions they make?

No, making a change to the punishment system because you got butthurt 8 years ago over issues that barely exist today is stupid regardless of whether player retention would go up or down.

I nearly did. I didn't feel like I could progress through the game anymore, because they were making it impossible to do so.

We are posting in a thread made by someone that just experienced something like this.
