The fact you brought it up and want to punish people for a non-issue that happened 8 years ago means you're not over it. Get over it. The trial you're using as an example doesn't even exist in the game anymore. That's how dumb this is.They are not owed your time... unless you queue for a duty and commit said time. Because if you leave, you have wasted their time. As I explained earlier, 40 minutes of my time was wasted the day that happened to me.
Exactly this.
I am over it but it's important to remember and reflect on your experiences when trying to relate to, empathize and agree with people, as I am doing with the OP.
Not for trials, and it'll be a long time before they get through the sidequest dungeons at this rate.
You're right. It's faster to queue for duties now in most cases, because the general population of the game was lower in Heavensward. Nevertheless, the argument that tank queues are instant is only true for roulettes and does not apply in the slightest for direct queues, and never has. Everyone just forgets this point because they are used to roulettes.
I wouldn't have this issue now. You know why? Because I'm through the MSQ and the only duties I direct queue for are current content. But that isn't necessarily the case for new players, so the only way for me to relate is to remember when I was a new player.

It's more that I think people should be punished for it in the future. It's also not a non-issue; it has the capability to drive away players and any MMORPG's goal is to reduce pain points for new players to increase retention.
They solved the issue by removing the entire fight from trial roulettes. Now you don't gotta worry about those poor poor sprouts who'd be getting instant-queues nowadays anyway. Now get over it.
Edit:
I swear, 'increase player retention', coming from someone who didn't even quit when it happened to him and continued to play the game. Hogwash. Argue the merit of the argument itself, not based on some immeasurable idea like "player retention". What if they implemented a change where they didn't even get a 30 minute timeout, and removed any penalty at all, and it turned out that player retention actually got higher? Does that mean you'd be all for it? Are you that invested in Square Enix's stock price that you want them to keep all the players they can, regardless of what boneheaded decisions they make?
No, making a change to the punishment system because you got butthurt 8 years ago over issues that barely exist today is stupid regardless of whether player retention would go up or down.

Ugh...
So what if my cat is on fire? What if my fish is drowning? What if my bird forgot how to land?
And now I can't play roulettes for the rest of the day because of a small IRL thing that needed to be taken care of? 30 mins is fine.
It's also really not hard at all to find a replacement player.

This a terrible idea. Roulettes exist to populate required content so queue times are reasonable for first-timers, and as a means to level. There are a couple of alliance raids that I won't play on caster because: 1. I will have a miserable time; 2. Anyone who replaces me will likely be a far greater asset than me in clearing. For those who roulette queue into a dungeon and then immediately quit because they don't want to do that dungeon, they should be locked out of roulettes until the reset next day. This should also apply to those who rage quit before the dungeon is completed.
This would not apply to those who get disconnected due to network issues, and when they do reconnect they must rejoin the dungeon they got disconnected from, and are barred from undergoing any other roulettes until either that dungeon completes, or they are voted out from the party.
It's ridiculous to waste people's time, especially those who have been in a queue for 30+ mins, only to leave the party stranded without a tank or healer. Abandoning a dungeon should be voted on by the entire party.
I think it's a fair penalty for those who want all the benefits of easy tomes and xp, but don't want to have to actually EARN the rewards, or think they're too good to party with the likes of "noobs". If you queue into the roulettes, you have to take what you're given. As they say, beggars can't be choosers.
I accept I have the option of not queuing into alliance raids as a caster, but being locked out for 30 minutes strikes me as a reasonable penalty when my actions are not hurting anyone else.
Only time I leave a dungeon or raid. Is when it is clear that it's full of complete and total failure. No this is a bad idea, why do people need to experience a bad idea before their brains click "oh this is stupid, and I was stupid for supporting it"
The 30 minute timer is fair.
You don't have to make it such a big deal.
For instance earlier today I was in the middle of an expert dungeon, but I had to leave becuase something happened irl that I had to deal with asap. It only took me 5 minutes to fix it, but I thought that it would be better to leave and have someone else take my place rather than having the party wait for me.
Making punishments harsher doesn't solve anything, it just make the game worse.
I can understand wanting to make the penalty harsher on people that willingly leave a duty as soon as it starts
however I'm a bit confused by what you say about those who happen to disconnect
Is that not how the system currently works for them? I don't know why the specification of them having to do the duty before being allowed to use duty finder again is needed
If they disconnect and come back, they'll be in that duty or they'll have been removed

I nearly did. I didn't feel like I could progress through the game anymore, because they were making it impossible to do so.
We are posting in a thread made by someone that just experienced something like this.over issues that barely exist today

It's easy to say "It's a roulette, take what you get", but there's occasionally groups where one person can drag the entire team down over and over again and no one wants to kick them because they don't want to be mean.
For an example, back in EW before the dungeon shortcut changes, I had a Malikah's Well run where the healer kept running into the middle of the cross pattern AoEs of the last boss and instantly dying, we had no res caster and the tank was a DRK, the healer was also entirely silent and any attempt to help didn't work. So we wipe because healer died, ran all the way back, just to see the healer dive at the cross AoE and instantly die again, what could you even do in that situation besides leave?
