Just buy crafted gear and grind blue tomes to upgrade it. It's not expensive and not difficult. Sure, it won't be BiS but BiS takes time and effort to do, as it should.

To be fair "not expensive" depends. For 7.1 I bought the crafted gear and it cost me almost 2 mil and that wasn't even every piece. Some people have it and some people don't. I could see the frustration if your two options were locked out tombs, or gil that you didn't have.
Universalis and server hop. If you're trading up, you don't even need to trade in the gear you're planning on using as the vendor gives you generic certificates. My accessories weren't more than 40k each as I bought off-role pieces and then turned them into augmented in-role pieces. Shop smarter, not harder. To be fair "not expensive" depends. Come on. With 2 mill I managed to fully gear 2 roles (caster and healer), with every piece. Including 4 weapons.
It was just a matter of hoping between servers at my datacenter to grab that gear piece with the best price.
If you clear savage, gearing melee is as easy as any other role. If you don't do savage, you don't need BiS item level gear.
Augmented crafted gear, unaugmented or augmented tome gear is more than enough for any other content.
By turn 4 you're already using 6 drops of gear + pages + tombstone acc week 1. You wouldn't be merely in the previous BiS.
Meanwhile, cutting prices in half would mean 1 piece of armor from week 1 tombstones instead of 1 accessory, which is hardly relevant compared to the crafted gear and the Savage drops themselves. That alone would not cause players to steamroll each savage boss in "6 minutes" on week 1...

Even if you funnelled all of the drops from turn 1-3 on to a DPS and dance partnered them, you'd struggle to meet the checks for turn 4 without crafted gear. I don't think P8S would have been possible, even after the 1% nerf.By turn 4 you're already using 6 drops of gear + pages + tombstone acc week 1. You wouldn't be merely in the previous BiS.

Just use the marketboard and buy crafted gear. Some augmented crafted gear pieces are BiS if you don’t do savage.
But yes the tomes are very limited. They could easily double the weekly cap on odd number patches. I just got an alt through DT last week and the very limited cap is annoying when trying to catch up or switch jobs.

This game has gearing? Gear doesn't matter in this game, whatever you get is going to get replaced in the next patch by some catch up gear anyway that you can buy off the marketplace.
If you are talking about the current iLvl cap stuff, I agree, there is layers about how it could improve.
But getting a "good enough to get your started" Augmented crafted gear, Archeo Kingdom right now, is extremely simple, took me 4 days of roulettes for the tomes and a couple hours of crafting and gathering to get my RPR full 720, it felt like an exceedingly simple process.
