im confused about something in pvp...

so iv done pvp for a while to the point that im at least confident in saying i get the gist of it and iv even gotten a few near wins and even solid victories against LV 100 Fighters even with my LV 77 Dank knight yet i just lost 5 times in a row to a just out of StormBlood, self proclaimed buttonmasher Monk. hell i fought them with my LV 82 Monk and still got washed.

im not tilted but i cant really find anything i missed

either i got hella lucky in a wild amount of fights, really am out of practice, or button mashing is uncomfortably viable.

    anything i be doing wrong?

Level doesn't say anything about PvP skills tbh. After all, you could be a PvE player that has so far focused on the story, played casual battle content or done savage and ultimate raids and now tries out PvP for the first time on your lvl 100 job. The skills required in PvP are very different from PvE fights so even a savage raider might not be good at it without practice.

On the other hand, you can unlock PvP at lvl 30, so a person can theoretically play PvP alongside their entire journey from ARR to EW. The low level cap also means that tons of good players have alts. So you'll see lvl 50 players completely destroying you from time to time because it's a veteran playing.

I don't know what is behind that buttonmasher monk of yours in particular. Perhaps they are an alt, perhaps they are a player who still progresses through the MSQ but who has been playing PvP a lot on the side, perhaps they are new but PvP just comes easy to them (maybe easier than PvE/maybe it's more fun than PvE for them) so it's hard to say without knowing any details.

Are you talking about 1v1 duels in the Wolf's Den duelling area btw or was that monk on your enemy team five times in CC?
Because some jobs are also better at 1v1 duels than others (monk I think has a pretty strong base kit for that)? So sometimes there is also a simple class advantage. For example, even a good dragoon might be unable to take out a GNB (or PLD or RDM) in 1v1 simply because GNB is so busted.

And if you refer to CC matches then this can just be bad luck (maybe you kept getting bad teams and the monk kept getting good comps). You can have win or loss streaks of 5+ matches in CC simply thanks to team RNG if you aren't a super cracked top player that can carry 4 bad team mates (ranked flashbacks say hi).

Your win rate in CC will always lean towards 50%.

Then it doesn't matter. Jobs are balanced not for 1 x 1, but for CC matches. Also monk is nice for duels in wolf den arena.

Anyway, to defeat a monk in a duel, you just need to press guard when you see the Phoenix status of your opponent.
