The game needs to open up

Just because they game has followed a format for a decade doesn't mean it has to remain this way. Everything in this game is too compartmentalized and on rails.

How hard would it be to try out an expansion where zones aren't locked by MSQ,
-where quests don't have braindead markers telling you where to go
-where dungeons are nothing like the stale formula we have
-where underwater isn't just a pretty landscape and combat/breathing mechanics are tried out.
-Where exploration and open world events are tried through the entire introduced zones instead of designated exploration instances like Eureka and Bozja.
-Where some side quests are just damn hard
-Where some open world dungeons are introduced, and the mobs are just lethal

Sure, not all of these systems and things will be hits with everyone, and people are going to complain about them but no one will be able to point the finger and say they've given up just like we all feel they have in DT.

It's obvious to me the current method to the game will just drive it to the ground sooner rather than later. It's time to break the shackles and explore another path for this MMO.

This game needs to work on producing:
    1. Shock
    2. Awe and wonder
    3. Curiosity
    4. A feeling of freedom

It would be great for the game for once to release content that doesn't feel like the same junk reskinned, for the 100th time.

I guess. We really have to ask the following question. Who is the FFXIV formula serving better at this point? The players or the devs?

Lets be extremely honest here. It is in service of the devs more than the playerbase, it gives them stability and some metrics to works towards in their every day lives every year so everything is calm and they can farm a paycheck for years on end. This is GREAT for job stability. Its just bleeding into the game and its HELL OF BORING to experience in a game.

We come here to get away from the normal job life and daily chores. But it feels like we're trapped in someone else's digitized version of it at this point. NGL.

No, you have to ask yourself the following : Why Old School Sandbox MMO type have died?

I'm an old MMO player, i started on EverQuest in 1999.... And seriously, people who never experienced those type of content, should never ask for it.
The reason? Simple : The Players....

Sandbox MMO tend to generate a ton of griefer (Stealth Boss Claim, Mob Train to whipe a party and take their XP spot, PK that would make look like serial killer as casual etc... etc...)

Seriously, what you asking is either a new FF MMO or to kill FFXIV.... because the majority of modern MMO players only know Theme Park MMO and, most of them, wouldn't be able to adapt to the way more harsher environment that Sandbox MMO deliver..

You’re talking like the game isn’t dead already lol. Pretty sure that aside those who just started it 99% of the player base is merely hanging on in hopes that things change, but pretty much no one wants it to continue the way it is currently.

That is a big tell if you ask me.

I'm a 1999 EverQuest player too and reading the OP I was just sitting and thinking "EverQuest is still in service..."

So much of that is old school MMO design that modern MMOs have just moved past now.

There is a some Old MMO still in service, yes... But most of them (if not all) are just in maintenance mode and are only populated with an handfull of die hard fans.(And the server are 25 years old technology, so it doesn't cost a lot to run them)
Some new player pop from time to time just to do tourism ("i want to see how old school MMO look like")... But that's all.

The past 10 years 98% of the attempt to make new Sandbox MMO (Aka "Old School") have failed miserably, and those that are still in service, barelly survive (except BDO). This is facts.

Who's gonna tell em that OSRS and Classic WOW dwarf FFXIV. Also, pretty much every MMO from back in the day has a thriving private server or retail server population in some cases in the hundreds of thousands, especially if you look at FFXI. Its actually a decent chunk of what the population was back in the day before MMO's were as popular. Seems like it all adds up and makes sense.

Also the most popular games on the plant are hands down FPS games, mobile games, and FPS mobile games lol. You wana talk about toxic that seems to be the most broard with the most open audience. Under the logic of "the players" isn't that what we want? Oh wait I think Yoshi P seems to agree since there IS a mobile game coming. GG's mates.

It sounds to me like, "I had a bad experience in the past, so let’s not try again." Devs shouldn’t stop trying new things just because there might be some discrepancies.
This game has never catered to just one specific audience, and it doesn’t now.

CBU3 doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel, but it should be possible to create new types of content that also appeal to casual players.
