I'm not sure if you realize this, but Mechanist fits a Job more than it fits a class. Unlike "Lancer" which was the name for Final Fantasy Tactic's Dragoon. Mechanist in other Final Fantasy game has had their own characters and mechanics.

When you mention Mechanist I can never get the image of Edgar Figaro with a chainsaw out of my head.

It's sense evolved around guns as a weapon, which is fine by me - and I expect it will become a branch of Musketeer and counter Musketeer's potential job class: Corsair.
The class I'm talking about would be more like a crafting class rather than a full on class with a job soul. What if the magitek armor were to work as the class's "soul", where Machinist (or class named Engineer) would be able to use abilities named tools much like FFVI, however when equip with a Machinist soul, the use of a magitek armor would become available (along with all of the beacons and whatnot). This wouldn't make Engineer much of a melee class, however perhaps engineer has access to a single turret (or even automaton) before acquiring the soul.
