GTAO really needs to be tuned. This awful halo effect reminds me of some of the super early SSAO implementations from games well over a decade ago.

Oof, yeah uh... I hate to remind you, but uh this game is over a decade old. :P
Graphics updates don't necessarily mean the engine was updated as well. It's most likely going to take more twirling of the spaghetti code to make it more saucy.
SWTOR is right in the middle of doing this very thing, but updating the engine itself would literally bust that game into non-existence (which was already a discontinued version of Hero when it was created and hacked up so much a butcher would have been proud).
This has absolutely nothing to do with the games age man, GTAO is a new implementation with the graphics update. The older HBAO+ does not have this issue and looks a lot better in instances like this. I'd say it's an issue when a newer, supposedly superior graphics setting looks worse than a much older one. It literally looks like over-tuned Reshade AO sometimes. No reason this cant be fixed with some settings changes.Oof, yeah uh... I hate to remind you, but uh this game is over a decade old. :P
