HOW?
I tend to play AST in CC and oh, my god, the amount of times I have come across silver or gold dps doing trash dmg, today has been way too many. How is it possible that I end up at the top as an AST!
HOW?
I am started to believe that the matching system of CC rewards poor performances. Hear me out...
This is all anecdotal, but I am starting to believe it could be true.
I am by no means a fantastic CC player. I have played FL for about two years and have gotten used to PvP. I have also delved into casual CC for a while. I have about 45 wins in ranked CC and have made it to silver 1.
After reaching silver, I have noticed that my performances have gone up and up in terms of DPS and even kills. So that is good. But I also have noticed that the better I do individually, the worst my matches seem to get, and get paired with people whose performances are, to say the least, quite underwhelming compared to mine.
My hunch is that if you do terribly in this game, the system will pair you up with good players, and if you are one of those good or okay players, you will be burdened with people who tend to under perform more often than you do.
Again, this is anecdote, but I am convinced that that's partly what has been happening to me today, as per my observations.
Also, I should add, the matchmaking system working that way would be classic square enix trying to equalize by all means... but I could be wrong, who knows!
Unranked to Gold bracket is a messy mix of fairly new players and veterans who started the grind slightly slower. Player performance will vary wildly, especially if one team is running the other over.
As for damage AST is super good right now and spits both damage and heals out like mad.
AST is incredibly overtuned atm. thats probably a factor
Some jobs do need to be enabled by their team in order to do good damage.
Like you can't expect even an amazing BLM player to top the damage charts if they spend the entire match being hounded by a MNK and a DRG with not a single person on their team peeling for them.
Also some jobs just don't do very much damage by default, with most of their contribution coming from the utility they put out or the space they create.
You probably think 40 victories is a lot but this is very little in the world of probabilities. Sometimes you can get streaks of 10 wins straight and the next days it's gonna be 15 losses.
This also means that some people luck out in the first brackets/leagues and get a hard reality check once they get hard stuck in gold or low plat.

I need to grind harder
I am not sure it was meant sarcastically or not but I do realize that I wasn't clear in how I phrased it. This was definitely not aimed at you, but at the players you can be paired with below Platinum. People can just luck out. Let the top players that have been straggling climb up and the rest decant a little, and try and reach platinum where you'll get less wild swings in skill level that you find in bronze-gold (they're still there though). If you truly want a position a bit more reflective of skill level, it starts at Diamond because there is no safety net at the bottom.
Sure but that's eventually tied to the teams and matchmaking you get and this in most team based multiplayer. I'm sure it's similar in mobas, shooters, etc. This to me is the most frustrating thing right now. Win three matches, lose 5 and you're right back where you started. The devs have completely missed what makes ranked PVP fun and rewarding. Thankfully we have the progression system but climbing the ranks at times feels like trying to climb a grease-coated ladder and everything is on fire.
It gets worse when you actually get paired with people of your level, or even higher (aka Diamond, Crystal, Crystal+...). It will swing a lot and once in crystal you don't even have a positive climbing probability anymore since it's rating based. What I'm trying to say is that before getting hard stuck somewhere you'll need to have played a lot of games for your elo to properly reflect your performance, like in a lot of multiplayer games.

I am actually in agreement with you. It's a very small sample considering how many matches top players have played.
Will report back when I'm at 200 ranked matches. I think I should have a different perspective then.
