From my understanding, Sareel Ja after being knocked out by Zoraal Ja waited for an opportunity to get inside the portal to the golden city but, instead, ended up in a "nexus" type zone, or a world between worlds, and through that ended up having visions of Vana'diel.

Is that correct? What does that imply, that the portal is not in fact a direct connection between the Source and the 9th, but rather just a general portal that can theoretically take you anywhere?

Does that mean that Vana'diel is one of the shards, or that when in this "nexus" you can have visions of places beyond the shards - completely different dimensions entirely?

And, perhaps most importantly, were the original creators of the portal (Preservation, I believe) aware of this?
When Sareel Ja went through the portal he fell into a cleft between dimensions (what we as players might know as the Interdimensional Rift). While there he percieved the realm of Vana'diel, a world and dimension completely seperate from Etherys. His redirection, for lack of a better term, is likely due to Everkeep shifting into the source, and so disrupting the pathway. Preservation, I think, was unaware of this, after all they didn't ever figure out how to get the "key" to work, as far as they were concerned Dimensional movement was a hypothesis.
