This sounds, imo, absolutely awesome. My biggest fear about the new battle system is that we are going to loose a lot of customization. I would like to suggest, however, that you give crafters a way to remove "materia" as well. No one wants to have the koolest piece of armor ever, customize it, and then find a better customization.Among the devs, we are tentatively calling this the Materia System, though that name may change. This new system will allow Disciples of the Hand to fuse materia to weapons and armor using special catalyst items gathered by Disciples of the Land.
Disciples of War and Magic can customize and personalize their gear
Disciples of the Hand can answer the materia-fusing needs of others
Disciplies of the Land can gather catalyst items to meet the realm’s demands
I’ll be posting more details on the Materia System at a later date.
Another exciting prospect ... will the advent (see what I did there?) of Materia in XIV introduce Summons?

Pro: Materia System
Con: Easy crafting, insta-crafting, and easier ranking in general.
I never was into crafting, even in Final Fantasy XI I ignored it. Until now! "Materia System" yes please! It feels more Final Fantasy with that name.
This all sounds great but in the current system stats are worthless, so I hope the dev team deals first with the effect of stats on given character/job before there is an implementation of this system.
They did address that, I believe. If memory serves, these changes are being implemented in conjunction with adjustments to the battle system, so that everything is adjusted and balanced at once.
