Well said Biggs! NO on just stat boosts. YES on skill boosts/upgrades/etc. Perhaps even a super boost when a complete set of gear meets specific Materia combinations to pump out a major skill bonus like Biggs mentioned in his list of superb ideas, i.e. If certain materia split up into family types that, if equipped in certain combinations, could produce very interesting effects on certain skills and stats for various classes/roles.

I am completely in favor of naming it the after the great materia system of FFVII, however I feel that doing so is a huge commitment to making it perfect... for example... does SE really want to dub something small like socketing gems into equipment materia?
I'd say if they even THINK to bring up materia they should go all out at make it have to do with learning skills or even enhancing abilities in the way that runes will in Diablo III (those who havent seen it, please do... you will be impressed).
I'd just hate for the awesome concept of materia that we have a lasting impression of from FFVII come into FFXIV and be a petty socketing system.... make materia useful for abilities or skills.
I do have to agree with a post a long-ways back saying maybe the basic materia could be for enhancing stats (str, int, dex etc. and also def, atk, etc.) and then having those basic components combine into other materia which enhances different effects (he mentioned "killer" skills), or even enhancing skills... I'd love to see the system have a lot of content such as maybe some materia lowering the stamina cost of Cure for example, or increasing the duration of debuffs, or as I said with the D3 reference, having them add extra effects on skills.
Bottom line/tl;dr: If materia is gonna get involved, it's gotta have a huge impact such as you equip different materia to learn skills with AP or the likes, or else it has to have an extremely content rich socketing role with various effects on skills and stats, also then enriched via the various combinations they are used in, generating combination effects!
/rant ... I hope a dev can comment on this!
PS: It's 4:07AM but I had to get that all out... bear with me, I know it's all over the place lol.

MATERIA!!!!!!! PLEASE keep the name. Also can it be de-crafted back out of the armor? That would be something Not many games do.
Biggs and Hellsoul,
Nice posts, totally agree with you guys there. I have faith the development team will make something truly amazing with the Materia System. They do need to live up to the great legacy that the name of the system entails. There is a huge chance here to implement something truly unique and engaging (not simply putting "gems" in equipment, as others said is common in MMOs - I never played anything but FFXI and FFXIV, so I wouldn't know myself).
The time and effort SE is dedicating to listen and understand community opinions and desires also has me more confident that future changes (including the Materia System) will bring to life features that shall satisfy us. Let's keep hoping they live to our expectations this time.
That said, I just remembered about the linked materia slots, where you could build some nice combos, combining two materia for different effects (like Elemental + Ice, Added Effect + Poison, etc). Maybe we could have some Blue Materia (the linking type) in FFXIV also! Btw, the independent (purple) materia (such as HP Plus, MP Plus, Long Range, Counter Attack and others) would fit perfecly in FFXIV, with little or no adaptation needed.
Yours sincerely,
Valen

Not going to lie...I would like cameo weapons or more familiar legendary FF weapons implemented at some point. Maybe not a literal buster sword, but still like excalibur, gungnir, aegis, save the queen, etc.
