Someone on here complaining they don't understand clockwise/counter clockwise while a couple expansions back we all had to learn what larboard meant....

You're doing content where you already have to learn mechanics, learning terms should be expected. You shouldn't be arguing that you should be at the end of learning. If we have to learn what rizz is, you can learn what clockwise is.

Nobody knows what "Larboard" means. People were already calling it "Port" by the time of the TITANIC.

Every raider in XIV knows what "Larboard" means within the context of the OMEGA fight, and that's all that matters. If someone tells me they don't know what CW/CCW means and I'm leading the raid, I just go around in each direction to show them and move on. I don't care if they're 13 or 93, if they grew up with Baby Shark or if they know that a BetaMAX tape is. All I want is for my party to understand my instructions within the game we're playing.

If I say: "Gank mid so I can have prio for drake or grubs as the wave pushes before their ult is up" it doesn't matter if you're a child or a elderly person. It only matters if you play League or not.

If I were to give an honest opinion in good faith. I would need some context about how long they have been raiding and how he teaches or has taught in the past. If that were truly the reaction I were getting from him, then I would be ashamed at myself for having made him feel he needed to give a defensive reaction about simply not knowing something. It falls to me to be a good teacher. But again, I would need a little more information.

    One of today's Lucky 10,000

The Webcomic XKCD makes the point that given the birth rate of the United States, for each thing that "everyone knows" when they are adults, every day there are 10000 people who hear it for the first time.
    There's an XKCD for everything.

So let's not mock people who do not know things, even common things, if they are willing to learn. They're one of today's lucky ten thousand, because one can only experience the wonders of learning something for the first time once.
If this journey has taught me anything, it is the importance─and difficulty─of holding to one's convictions in the face of failure...of striving always to replace one's ignorance with knowledge.

Despite having seeing it many times, and know what to do when the markers appear, yesterday I had to ask in Novice Network what "limit cut" refers to. And I'm a Battle Mentor.

That's because the fandom insists on referring to generic concepts by the name of a single battle instance rather than something that actually describes the concept.

I cringe whenever I hear someone in a static refer to an In/Out mechanic as Domino or Chariot during shot calls.

I think most of the pushback in this thread is that the example was presented as a generational issue. It's not just that they didn't know something, but that they claimed it's normal for young people to not know that thing.

If the example hadn't been clockwise but instead was something like "We were doing Ozma and I said we're doing the JFK strat and then we wiped because the zoomer didn't know that meant to take the meteors 'back and to the left'" then sure you could blame that on generational knowledge.

At the very least, it would be routinely used in grade school math and science classes. Moreover, "clockwise" is self-explanatory for all those who have seen an analog clock; that is, everyone.

When I started playing XIV, there was a lot of terminology I didn't know, either because it is specific to the game or part of the lexicon of the younger generation. Google solved this issue in ten seconds.

You mention someone explicitly told you they didn't understand the term. I'd suggest they were pulling your leg/yanking your chain/messing with you.
I really would just let the joke fall flat then and remind him and anyone else in the group that if you don't know something? Even if you think it is the most simple question do not belittle people for what they do not know and you don't need to 'pretend' to be stupid to me if that is indeed your intention. I will know it. Again this all needs context and is hypothetical.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
