The irony, what you responded to has nothing to do with compasses. Pot calling kettle?

This whole thread is kinda depressing. OP’s point is that different generations might have different knowledge gaps or words to describe things and that we should be mindful of this because we are all playing together. Instead a lot of responses are people soapboxing and trying to feel superior to others, completely missing the point.

Why don’t people ask if they don’t know something? *gestures to the responses in this thread* That’s why.

Edit: I don’t think devs need to dumb down mechanics because of this. We don’t need to dumb down the fights anymore.

y'all are making my brain MELT i can't with this thread lmao

    also,
the OP came on here and started this whole generational rant and pulling up college statistics about how dumb we are.
expect to get some irritated replies
I get where you’re coming at with the compass. I still think it’s a stretch because OP was talking about was talking about rotational movement and not directional positions.

As for the statistics, if they say that we as a cohort tend to lack knowledge on something then that should be considered when communicating even if you and I have that knowledge ourselves.

Where did I say anyone is dumb?

I didn't. I said life experience is different and that is causing problems when people don't take that into account. Just like you currently are.

I'm not making assumptions. I've have talked to players that have said they did not know certain terms, such as clockwise, until they started playing the game and someone else had to explain it to them.

Also note I never said all of GenZ and GenA. It's on you if you choose to assume that's what I meant.

Let me requote something from my original post:

Those differences exist. As someone said, it may not even be related to age but other factors.

But some of those differences are definitely age related because some of what was commonplace 50 years ago are almost never used anymore or in a few cases no longer even exist outside of museums and archives.

Instead of automatically telling someone they're dumb for not knowing something and that they shouldn't be playing the game, perhaps try explaining what they didn't understand - of course assuming they have the courage to speak up considering the number of people in this thread who are blatantly calling people stupid and incompetent for not knowing a certain term.

I'm fairly certain the players in the example I gave (and it was just an example, not a point for people to tunnel focus on) are neither of those things when they're progressing on the 6th of 8 Mythic raid bosses in WoW's most recent raid.

I realize you were using this clockwise business as an illustrative example, but I am genuinely interested in the assertion that a native English speaker could have never come across the term. It would require them to have never rotated anything, unless there is another modern term for indicating the direction of rotational motion. At the very least, it would be routinely used in grade school math and science classes. Moreover, "clockwise" is self-explanatory for all those who have seen an analog clock; that is, everyone.

When I started playing XIV, there was a lot of terminology I didn't know, either because it is specific to the game or part of the lexicon of the younger generation. Google solved this issue in ten seconds.

You mention someone explicitly told you they didn't understand the term. I'd suggest they were pulling your leg/yanking your chain/messing with you.

People in general might have different knowledge gaps or words to describe things. Trying to make this out as if the year you were born in deserves special consideration is beyond silly.

Someone asks a question? Just answer it. The year they were born is irrelevant. The year they started their first MMO is irrelevant. The year they started playing FFXIV is irrelevant.

    That happens naturally.

If one person gives me a quizzical look when I say a thing, it's probably just them.

If twenty people in a row give me a quizzical look when I say a thing, the problem is me.

Design needs to tread a common ground that all can relate to.
no, this is the last thing developers need to worry about. the game braindead easy already. if something needs explaining, then someone in the group can explain it, or if no one does... they can look it up.

the developers already make the game so easy it almost plays itself. being LAZY isnt generational.... for the love of the twelve, at some point people need to be responsible. and that means... gods forbid.... LEARNING SOMETHING NEW
