Squonk sensed, but hidden

Steps:
1. Fly around south Sea of Clouds looking for Squonk, because that's where they spawn.
2. Sense the mark to the north as I approach from the south of Vundu Ok' Bendu.
3. Fly around that proximity looking for squonk.
4. No appearance of Squonk.
5. Log out and back in.
6. Still no Squonk.

What was your Z axis coordinate?

This is relevant because sometimes Squonk's spawn points are above you on an island higher up, or lower down. The system cannot tell how high or low it is; just whether it's north, south, east or west.

That spawn point in particular has an island below it which makes it specifically relevant for this issue.

If you were approaching from where you said, you would probably be below the island where it spawns.

In other cases, a player could have pulled it into a hiding area (such as a plant). This is fairly common because it's used to spawn the Rank S Elite Mark Bird of Paradise and they sometimes want to make it harder to spot so they can spawn it while AFK.

There is one other possible cause I can think of, which is that I believe all NPCs despawn after 24 hours.
