If I'm understanding you correctly, then in fact not all final fantasy games have had instanced battles, i.e. where the area shifts when you encounter an enemy, whether battles are random or not. FFXII had all enemies out in the world, and you fought them there.
9 was the only one, the idea is that it would be pretty much like what we have now for dungeons and primals etc. but the instance would shut down right down the fight, only problems i would see with this would be the servers only being in japan and the problem that spouted up earlier with instances being created with no one in them


I have to add, they are already going to implement it for the roaming primals in 2.0, i would just like them to extend the reach to other things and remove the gates on dungeons that used to be instanced
