It's also pretty decent for leveling alt jobs, many people still don't have the glams or mounts from there. Sure, they aren't as alive as they once were but they're doing a LOT better than stuff like Criterion Dungeons and stuff. Old content in any MMO gets less popular over time but the fact that people run it at all, two or three expansions later, makes it pretty decent, imo. They definitely have something there, they just need to improve upon it and add a reward system that will keep people coming back.

What would keep you farming content past obtaining X? What do you think would keep others farming content past obtaining X?

I don't think the game is being designed for people who hate it (no matter what impression the forums leave). It's being designed for players who like it but also like playing other games. Play until satisfied, then go play other games, then come back for new content.

Is that such a terrible thing?

If it comes to the point it has now where the content is being drip fed to us so slowly people leave for months and years at a time, kinda? Especially considering this is a game that requires a subscription.

How many of those single content F2P games have the same players now as they had 4 years ago and how many of those players are driven by a new X being added to collect as opposed to enjoying the content?

The game makes up such a huge chunk of Square's annual income that it kind of is for them. If you don't do savage/ultimate prog on-content for fun, patches are so infrequent and light nowadays that you get the best experience out of the game by playing through X.0, unsubbing until X.5 comes out about 2 years later, playing through what's been added, and then because that definitely won't take 4 1/2 months, you unsub again until X+1.0 assuming you still care by that point.
