The series is the battle pass that usually lasts for a full major patch with the rewards. It is still possible to obtain rewards from the last series when a new one comes if you haven't claimed them, but you can't progress through it anymore.

The ranked seasons (=/= series) happen more regularly, usually there is 2 of them within a series' timeframe, but not always (end of EW had 3, DT release none).
