Even some of the much-hyped new MMORPGs fell flat and as much as systems can be blamed, part of it is always going to be that they just don't have 10 years worth of content.

I know some people who invested 10 years into this game think it "has no content", but for a new or returning player that is certainly not the case and if they want to do absolutely everything it will take them a long time. The same can't necessarily be said for any brand new MMORPG.

With that in mind, SE starting from scratch and making a new MMORPG doesn't seem... logical in the slightest.
There are plenty of ways to make it fun without creating a new game. It would be the far smarter option given the above.
I would probably make the distinction that 10 years of 'support' and 10 years of content are not the same thing.

Sure, it will take newer players a long time to catch up and do all of the content, which is a good thing. However, the pace at which the content is released for current expansion players isn't really a good state, especially when all of the grindier and more substantive content is backloaded to the latter half of the expansion cycle, as opposed to being introduced earlier on.

I am inclined to agree that part of the problem is they don't have an abundance of content. But much of the problem lends itself to the simple fact they never really had a core audience and developing that is always going to be a coin toss. Regardless of how much content you have in the game. - It's very difficult to indoctrinate people into entirely different systems.
