I don't think Square has the budget for a new MMO, and even if it did, they tend to have unrealistic expectations with their titles, if their response to FFXVI's sales are any indication. We're riding with FFXIV and FFXI for the foreseeable future. I don't know how the game works under the hood exactly, but I imagine they have the capability to try new things if they really wanted to. It's a matter of man-hours and not wanting to mess with the Shadowbringers formula that made them successful, I imagine.
You give Square Enix way too much credit. The recent absolute messes they managed to pull, it's pretty impressive. I wonder how is their NFT game doing as well..
I logged in for the free campaign and have reviewed the new patch. I have to say an extended break from the game after DawnTrail makes it feel like a bit of a scam. It's a collection of content that mostly comes across as very niche for different ends of the player base. This game is just lacking ideas that "surprise and delight" as publishers tend to echo so often. I'm not saying it won't appeal to anyone but the XI raid isn't all that exciting if you didn't play XI. The Ultimate raid is not exciting if you don't play Ultimate. That's not say this content isn't worth creating- SE just must have goals and data that I don't understand/ have access to. An Ultimate is the very last thing the game needs if you're trying to make XIV a bigger game in the space with more players. That's just the reality. People can harp on about them because 25 percent of players do it, streamers use it for content, whatever. This patch just reads like such a fumble outside people are totally obsessed with the game imo.
I also don't think pointing to other games and saying XIV is doing as well is effective a. Without backing it up with data and b. Even considering data, just because competitors are average doesn't mean SE needs to be considering the legacy of this brand. FF is a totally different brand from WoW.
I honestly think SE is stringing along subscribers and does not care at all about you unless you are a whale for them, and even then. Yoshi P is just a mouthpiece for a project they're bleeding dry to fund their insane single player content.
