Personally I don't mind this at all as long as emotes don't bring any additional buffs / benefits to the character. I couldn't care less.
I assume Squenix gains something when they collaborate with other companies to generate emotes such as the pizza eating emote and chicken eating emote -- both originally introduced in collaboration with other companies.
They would not be able to release those for free in the future -- that would be unfair to the original paying customers who bought those collaboration items, which also paints the other party in negative light.
Likely there's some legal issues as well in Japan when you do such things. We also don't know what type of contract Squenix had with the companies they collaborated with -- they may be required to provide some sort of payment / download to them... who knows.
In such cases it would make sense for Squenix to charge players for such emotes (only for those that were developed as a part of a collaboration).

I do like this game, it's fair for the devs to ask for a fair and equal compensation, and the subscription price has been around without inflation for a very long time. If they are hurting for money, maybe it's time to offer a higher priced subscription model. I'm in a position that I could pay more, and I'd be very happy to do. I'd have only one catch; the content NEEDS to be in-game and accessable to all somehow. If it meant a better game and community for players as a whole, I would offer more monetary support. I do think that many in the FFXIV community feel the same way, but we aren't given the option, and we're not given the perks for why that higher subscription model would be justified to be on-offer.
You're right. This is a very unpopular opinion. You're asking to penalize those players who don't suffer from some weird completionist complex. You're basically suggesting a $5/month fine for those of us who don't buy the junk in the cash shop.

I mean, they have more than one subscription option as it is.. so my thought was if they offered that higher priced model for those who do actually want to support the game and the player base of the game, those who wished to could go to that higher model, on the condition that content would be accessible to everyone. That's the part you neglected to take notice of in my post. Not that everyone MUST be lifted to the $20 price... but, much like a Patreon or Buy Me A Coffee model, offering a higher tiered option isn't unheard of and sometimes people really just do want to support the genuine product... I am one of those people who could afford it, and therefore do feel its a duty onto myself to empower the collective whole of this mmorpg community...

People are saying SE is going bankrupt, and if that's true, perhaps they do need more funds... funds I would happily pay, under the condition players weren't restricted from getting things like emotes in the game. You just didn't see the nuance in my post because you assume I think everyone should be put to that higher price point, which I never said...

But no, clearly any kind of nuanced discussion about freedom of choice can't happen on the internet...

Instructions unclear, ended up with World of Warcraft's monetization system.

I'm guessing SE knows their business model better than we do, and find a cash shop a better option than two-tiered subscriptions. I also imagine there would be howls of protest when those on the lower tier saw, for example, emote-awarding quests from which they were locked out, and the usual nonsense about the game becoming pay to win.

I do thank you, however, for injecting some fiscal reality in this thread. Nearly all subscription-based games have a revenue balance between subs and micro-transactions. Those entitled souls here yelling "just give it to me for free" might like to take that idea on board. Less funds from the cash shop = higher subs.

I think the cash shop would be dramatically improved if stuff was account wide. I ain't buying a $7 emote for several characters.

Well what do you know: We actually got something account wide on the store recently. Now do it for all of them, Square, and maybe your price tag may actually matter.

Still, I find it a bit funny a week after making this thread they actually made something account-wide. I'm still going to advocate for that to apply to the rest of the store, at minimum, and also give us more earnable emotes in-game through story(because we do need more stuff that isn't tied to the store, honestly). Also, going to update the OP with a different thread that is tied to this.

To play FFXIV for 2 months, I buy the $30 Crysta package... so here is my question. Why are three emotes almost the price of two months of playtime?!
Leaping is 5 different emotes in one.

Taking a look at the emotes in the stores, they either cost £4.20, £1.15, or £7.44.
The £4 ones are relatively animated ones that are exclusive to the Online Store.
The £1 ones are from previous ingame events. (The cheers with different colours count since they're recolours)
The Ranger Poses cost £2 despite being from ingame events since there's two emotes per book.
Joyous Leaping, and Megaflare, cost £7 due to having 5 different emotes and being an absurdly large animation respectively.

The real question is why the Meister Figurine emotes are locked behind buying that instead of just being for £7 in the store.

The most ironic part is that Guild wars 2 also added a new emote recently. It is break dance emote. If You choose to swipe, It only cost 5 dollars and is account wide. If You choose not to swipe, You can grind gold to buy it... And l would argue that break dance is much more complex than frying an egg. It made a stark contrast with square enix.
