If SE has decided this game needs to be more like the other FF games, it's their right to make those changes since it's their IP. But any change to a product comes with the risk of losing customers not because they see the product as bad but because it has become too different from what fits into their comfort zone.
But they could also lose customers if we stop finding SF props cropping up here and there. It works both ways.

( no i'm not going to cancel my sub because they stop using SF themes )

I don't want to need to have played 15+ other games just so that I can get what the heck this one is doing.
I actually do like when XIV tries to be its own thing and I do think it indulges way too much into fan service. I am however not talking about the references to older FFs, but about what the series does best: merging all kinds of themes and aesthetics into what I do believe is an oddly cohesive ensemble. If anything, what puts me off the vibe isn't cyberpunk theming, it's casual glams and especially silly glams and all the things that stick like a sore thumb in terms of immersion, but maybe that's just me...
