    We need more transparency about these "DDoS attacks"

    With how frequent these DDoS attacks are getting and how much they are disrupting normal gameplay, combined with rumors from players saying it's not DDoS at all, but a bad routing hop... we need more communication and transparency from the FFXIV team. More than just the same repeated "there was an attack at this time. it's resolved." template posts that get copy-pasted.

    I'm very frustrated about these disruptions and I know I'm not alone. Please address this topic directly.

    There is a bad node, but unrelated to the ddos attacks. And there’s not much they can say. What more information are you expecting? People already seem to know very little about internet routing in general, as you’ll see people say they shouldn’t have to pay for a VPN because SE has bad servers, which isn’t what VPNs do or what the issue is.

    It’s not like this is an internal bug or server problem. This is an outside threat targeting either XIV specifically or the physical DC where the servers are located.


    The only way to prevent a ddos attack is to have massively more bandwidth and resources available than you need for day to day usage for the service itself. Microsoft, Sony, Amazon, other retailers, etc, are all susceptible to ddos attacks, and have faced them in the past. Just look at Amazon when the ps5 launched. Carts broke, pages didn’t load.

    I think they should refund the game time we're losing. This is borderline unplayable at times, I can't do alliance raids, people can't clear PoTD, people can't even clear raids without people dropping left and right.

    Sorry small indie company Square Enix but this has been ongoing for months, I want a SOLUTION, not excuses. If they need more bandwidth, then get more bandwidth. The fact they do nothing shows just how much they care about their end consumers.

    I agree that there is a bad node generally (even when everything is fine I can see packet loss with a tracert). Not to mention how VPNs significantly cut my ping showing the bad route it takes without one.

    But in addition to that there are sometimes DDoS or bandwidth throttling (or rate limits) on those nodes in addition. Sometimes it could be the countermeasure to those attacks that can work too well and affect connections.

    A lot of other services use cloud servers which help with shrugging off such attacks, something that SE doesn't because of the speed benefit of physical machines for games, but maybe they should consider them. The Cloud DC test went fine after all.

    The only other solution I can think of is for them to move the server to another location since I doubt this attack is actually aimed at SE. I don't see why it even would be.

    No other online game I play has this problem. WoW doesn't, Elder Scrolls Online doesn't. Only SE.

    Why is this the only paid subscription game that feels it is acceptable to give canned "there was an attack" responses for months to problems only they have without comping people for their loss of service?

    We need a REAL update SE, not just more stating the obvious. If you have been looking for a solution for two months, why pray tell have you still not found one?

    Usually when they say they are solving it on the lodestone, they mean the immediate attack, not from a long-term perspective.

    If WoW isn't having this problem, then something drastically changed since I quit playing four years ago - when I was playing it got so bad sometimes that you couldn't stay logged in for more than a couple of minutes for an entire weekend and the only response you'd get would be a blue post hours after it started saying something is going on, we're working on it, steps are being taken. If you look at the history of the DDoS attacks, you'll see they've been picking up since DT dropped - I have a sneaking suspicion that the two are related.

    Any more than "yeah this is happening, sorry for the inconvenience" is just giving the attacker the attention they seek. Like what else are they going to say? If you think they're lying about it, nothing is going to change that.

    I have now experianced them 2 nights in a row and 6 in the last week and a half. Always around the same time give or take a few hours. This is so foolish and they really need to find some way to block it even if it's making people log in with different "human tests".
