I'm convinced that the biggest reason people don't like Legacy is because some of the keys are flipped compared to Standard. If you switch to Legacy but change the offending keybinds, the controls work just like Standard except your camera doesn't continually snap whenever you move.

Keys bound to Move Left / Move Right in Standard: bind those keys to Point Camera to the Left / Point Camera to the Right in Legacy.
Keys bound to Strafe Left / Strafe Right in Standard: bind those keys to Move Left / Move Right in Legacy. Leave Strafe unbound.

In Legacy movement settings: Disable camera pivot.

This will give you "Standard, but the camera doesn't snap to character every time you move." It does however, disable turning in place--which is a separate problem which really should be solved by the devs making right click turn in place even when on Legacy.

You can disable the camera snapping when you move on standard. It's in camera controls. Frankly I think it should default to off.

I just prefer the way standard feels because I prefer the character-based movement. I like being able to move my character and camera independently of each other in the sense of like left being my character's left regardless of where my camera is facing. It just feels more natural to me personally. I also enjoy being able to easily backpedal which I use for minor positioning changes (and also the jump puzzles for small jumps without having to toggle walk) and also turning my character with just right click and not requiring the holding left+right+S or moving my character slightly.

I think everyone has their preferences but I also think the devs fumbled standard controls a bit and made it seem less intuitive than it's capable of being.
