    Intermittent momentary game freezes/stutter

    Not sure what's going on with the game but for a bit now I've been experiencing random momentary pauses in the game where everything on the game freezes, then it "catches up". I haven't changed any hardware, and I've kept up with Windows 11, BIOS, and driver updates. Hardware-wise itself, these are a relatively new occurrence, and my system is well beyond the recommended specs with a non-overclocked 13700K, 48GB of DDR5 running at non-XMP 5600, and a 4090. CPU and GPU are water cooled and temps have never been an issue. Game is installed on a raid array of nvme ssds. I typically use wifi, but I've run a really long lan cable through the house and the issue occurs that way as well. I generally have the bgm music off and am just listening to sound effects. I can't recall if those pause as well but given, I can't input a skill to generate one, I'm reliant on being around another player doings something while it happens. It's happened while I'm alone in my house crafting, solo doing fates, during roulettes and trusts, even during the afk gpose style camera moving between other pcs, nps, etc. I don't think the number of others or the number of effects triggers this. And as it even occurs during the afk gpose hopping screens, it seems regardless of the amount of input I am putting into the game (I've watched it stutter a few times already while typing this and registered as afk, where the gob npc it was targetted on head would stop briefly during its head bob and then resume at a different position).

    Are there some specific settings I should try and change/disable to try first? Currently I run the game at Nvidia's recommended settings for borderless windowed mode at 2560x1440 on one of my 2 monitors. I've tried a ton of different things already, such as turning off XMP, and the BIOS updates were for the Intel microcode stuff.

    My wife's system is also encountering them and has a different setup entirely, save running at the 2560x1440 resolution and being installed on a nvme ssd. That system is a single monitor, 32gb ddr5, 13400 (aio), with a 4070 ti (oem air cooler). I don't know the frequency she's encountering them as she's in a different room. She's using a physical lan connection but was previously using wifi. Changing to a physical connection made no improvement.

    I also had a similar issue. Check if the Device Manager is constantly "refreshing". If so, identify and remove the device causing the malfunction. By the way, in my case, the reason for the refreshing issue was that there were several TV options under "Bluetooth Devices" (they came from video playback apps with screen casting feature installed on Sony TVs running Android system). Deleting all of them from your Bluetooth devices resolved the problem.

    At what point does the issue occur?
    As mentioned in the original post, intermittently. There is no rhyme or reason, it just happens, sometimes almost immediately, others either I didn't notice it (like there wasn't enough movement on the screen to notice it freeze) or it didn't happen.

    How often does the issue occur?
    Varies and intermittent. Sometimes it's maybe once during a duty or roulette, other times its pretty frequent, like multiple times during the course of completing a fate wit or without others.

    Could you provide the exact error message received?
    There is no error message of any kind, everything on the game screen freezes then resumes like it's being fast forwarded to the correct point in time.

    Are you running any additional programs alongside Final Fantasy XIV?
    Google chat, messenger, discord, edge browser, excel, etc. It varies depending on what I'm doing. Say I'm trying to figure out melding, that's likely excel and maybe edge. Edge browser is typically up in some fashion, say for listening to music, or youtube, or looking up something, etc.

    Does the issue occur with one character or multiple characters?
    I really haven't been playing my alts, so I couldn't say.

    When the issue happens, is the PC over heating at all?
    Nope, not in the slightest. Coolant temp stays around 32c with cpu 56-60c and gpu around 43c

    Were any update or changes made to the PC around the time of the issue?
    Regular windows updates as well and nvidia driver updates, no change between those updates. These all seemed to start some time after Dawntrail's release but I wasn't paying enough attention to say a specific point when. I just know that more recently they've seem to become more frequent in occurrence and that any windows or nvidia driver updates since this increase in frequency has not impacted it as far as I'm aware.

    Does this issue occur if the game is run in full screen mode? Does it happen in borderless or windowed mode?
    As mentioned in my original post, I typically run in borderless windowed (as that seems to perform better with switching between the game and say clicking on something in a web browser on the other monitor). I've tried full screen mode and that has not had a noticeable impact one way or the other on when these occur, timing, frequency, etc. which is just generally hard to quantify as it's not easily reproduceable, it just happens.

    All steps taken to resolve the issue:
    Windows 11 repair
    Windows 11 reinstall, keeping settings
    Clean reinstall of Windows 11 which includes reinstalling the game
    All normal (not optional) Windows 11 updates
    All Nvidia updates
    All Gigabyte motherboard bios updates
    Various graphics settings changes, such as full screen, borderless windowed (typical), run game on other monitor in either, switched upscaler between Nvidia and AMD, all frame rate thresholds tested (currently below 30fps, as it's a 4090, it really shouldn't need dlss), various LOD and other detail settings (currently at nvidia's suggested for borderless windowed), various refresh rate limits incl none, display refresh (144), and 60, toggle limit when inactive or away

    Hi there, had a similar issue with the game constant freezing for x seconds or crashing with DX error. It was all caused by Discord and the hardware acceleration (Settings > Advanced) that wouldn't remain turned off. After I got it to stay off no more freezes. After some time it started freezing again even though Discord was not the issue anymore. Seems any browser which has hardware acceleration turned on will causes freezes on FFXIV and no other game. Turning it off from every browser I use, fixes the issue.
    Tried all manner of settings in nVidia control panel specifically for FF but nothing changes if hardware acceleration is turned on, on a background application. Turning off Intel APO for FFXIV does nothing (not sure if it actually does anything beneficial either) and I'm on the latest microcode revision for Intel's 13/14 series issue mitigation (though I never had any issues with the cpu even before).

    Having the same issue as above for several weeks now. During the startup of the game and while in it. Game never crashes to an error. Just randomly freezes for about 10-20 seconds than "catches up". The freezes can happen back to back in 10 min intervals 3-4 times then nothing for hours. Some days I never see it freeze at all. Didn't start happening to me till after the savage patch for this tier was released.

    I didn't see any issues with my devices within device manager how ever running a hardware scan does recreate the freeze i experience in game exactly.

    This sounds akin to what some players experience when FF14's servers are being hit by a DDoS attack: game stops updating for a period with everything staying in place, until that blip ends and then things start running as normal. Sometimes that lasts for just a few seconds, sometimes for minutes at a time.

    When this happens to you, I'd recommend asking others players in linkshells, FC's, /shout chat, etc if they're experiencing any lag, etc. Also make a note of the time and day it occurred, and then afterwards check the official FF14 Lodestone site to see if that lines up with any reports of a DDoS: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...ews/category/4

    DDoS attacks have been fairly regular over the past few weeks. In my subjective and anecdotal experience, the DDoS attacks seem to be getting less severe, though you can still notice these impacts from time-to-time.

    Hopefully this will help you to clarify whether there's actually something going with your network/PC/etc, or whether you're just seeing the expected effects of a DDoS that's beyond your control.

    Several times during savage fights it has happened and of course the rest of the group keeps going. During a high lag moment such as a DDoS attack or packet loss we can still run around normally but everything else is halted until it catches back up. Im seeing a fronzen screen of the game. They see me showing up as a disconnected. Its only in FF14 that this happens. All other games run smooth as expected.

    Good morning! Thank you for providing the requested information.

    Please try the following:
    - Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and sound drivers (if applicable). It appears that your GPU [NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090] driver was last updated on [7/29/2024], at this time a newer version should be available. Please try updating your graphics driver, generally a new version releases once a month.

    - Please try running the game as an administrator.
    - Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything.
    - Please be sure to disable or remove any overlays (Discord, Steam, NVIDIA etc.) as they may interfere with startup. It appears you may be using programs such as [NVIDIA GeForce Overlay] in the background, these type of programs may be causing interference.
    - Upon further review, it appears that you may be using Window's cloud program OneDrive. Please try disabling this program as it may cause interference as it tries to sync your files.

    Additionally, as you have mentioned another system on your home network experiencing similar issues we would like to touch upon your network settings by providing best practice suggestions. We advise clearing the cache/cookies/browsing data from your default web browser, disabling any web browser extensions (EG: ad-blocker) and trying again.

    Open the control panel of the PC and go to ‘Network and Internet’. Once there select ‘Internet Options’
    - Under the "General" tab, please delete ALL browser history.
    - Under the "Security" tab, please move the slider to the lowest possible settings or no higher than "Medium"
    - Under the "Privacy" tab, click “Advanced” and select ‘Accept’ under both First Party and Third Party Cookies.
    - Under the "Advanced" tab, please make sure that "Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid" is CHECKED.
    - Make sure that all SSL and TLS (EXCEPT SSL 3.0) are CHECKED. [SSL 3.0 should be UNCHECKED]
    - Hit "Apply" to save the settings, and then "OK, to close the Internet Options menu.
    - Right-Click on the FFXIV launcher icon and select "Properties"
    - Hit "Apply", then "OK" to save the changes.
    - Please RESTART your PC now.

    Please double check that your firewall or antivirus program is not interfering with the game. You may try either disabling your firewall/antivirus or creating an exception for FINAL FANTASY XIV.

    Strange as Nvidia's app is saying the current driver is 560.1, dated 8/5/24.... I'll update the drivers and retest some more.
    Regarding the other portion:
    "Clean" environment, nothing else running and the issue still occurs
    With the Nvidia's overlay (used for settings like Hue, etc.) has had no perceptible change and the issue still occurs, but one of the other replies hear and disabling hardware acceleration elsewhere if something I'm going to try (thanks Vel Z).
    I've tried completely removing my current AV. Running with Windows Defender nor without any av software running made no discernable difference.
    The OneDrive sync issue is something completely different and throws its error messages intermittently about settings file not able to be saved. This has started occurring again after I recently clean reinstalled Windows 11 in an earlier effort to try and resolve this. So, while the fix was previously installed, this problem was occurring.     I have tried all of the stuff regarding the browser cache clearing and that had no impact. Specifically regarding SSL/TLS being a best practice is another issue to me as Microsoft, etc. do NOT recommend enabling them due to their security vulnerabilities. Their recommendation is TLS 3.0 only and only enabling TLS 2.0 if needed. As enabling their use made no difference, I turned them back off.
