Accidentally clicking on wrong links, phishing, bad ads, poor security on site, etc.Happens to me too, It's irritating but at the same time I'm glad they have it just in case. Security tokens are only for people who don't have much knowledge of computers. It's practically impossible to get hacked unless you are naive enough to download a trojan or keyloger onto your computer. Don't waste your money on a token unless you don't know better about such things.
Lots of ways to get hacked. Many more than what you or I listed, in fact.
Rise Against - TorchesThe angels dance like feathers float, they're here to see and to be seen,
The clock strikes two, the music slows and each one slowly dons their wings,
Once outside they all pair off and hand in hand they leave
But I'm still waiting, yeah, and I'm still waiting
I had my security token since when I bought the CE nearly two years ago.
I never used it because I thought it would just be a hassle and take longer for me to log in, but after having the same problem as yourself (I was traveling a lot) I decided to give it some use and haven't turned back yet.
So yes, use your Square Enix Co Ltd. Official FINAL FANTASY XIV Security Token (TM) today, you won't regret it.
In regards to the last post I made. Allow me to correct myself by saying I'm not an expert on the subject. However, I've been playing online games since 1996. I've only ever had my account hacked once, and it happened in 2000. It was a Diablo II account, and I downloaded something that turned out to be a Trojan from what was in retrospect a very obvious trap. I blame my stupidity on being only 14 at the time.
I worded my comment poorly. Sometimes I tend to do that. I don't think it's a bad idea to have the security token, you can never be too safe.At the same time though, I don't think there are a lot of people out there after you XIV account in lieu of the unpopularity of the game. Unless the RMTs have something circulating to steel your account I doubt anyone else would take interest.
Never mind on second thought the RMTs probably do have something like that... Get a security token lol.
A security token won't help if your computer has been compromised. All one would need to do a replace the FFXIV launcher with a bogus executable that looks identical but loads a bogus webpage that's indistinguishable from the real thing. It would always return "bad login" every time, and any user is going to re-enter their information multiple times. Once they have three separate security token numbers, they have enough to remove it. And then change your password and email as well.
If you aren't aware that the login application uses MSIE to display a javascript generated web-page. It's a secure page, but easy to fabricate a forgery and load it.
And if I'm logging in from the same location EVERY TIME why should I have to enter my dumb token each time too? No need for me to enter it again.
Also, requiring repeated password changes will just cause the user to start ignoring email alerts about your password being changed. So when it is actually hacked and the password has been changed by some unknown entity, they dismiss it. This is not good practice.

Lest you forget they last for ten years and are being shipped from the other side of the world. Oh yeah and SE contracts with another company to make them and license the software that verifies the authentication of each code. So no they don't make money on selling security tokens. They make money on active subscriptions.
but getting the token might get you in trouble, me and my friend bought the collectors edition and he used the token, i didnt wanted because im bad remembering stuff, so i was afraid to loose it and not being able to log in, he did use that token and he lost it, he tried to reactivate his account and wasnt able because of the good help center service SE have, everyone that has called there must know what i mean, so he had to start over with my friend pass, so in a few words dont use that token, only if they improve their service that in my experience since FF XI wont happen. And you say you move a lot...
Its not that hard reactivating you password everytime you change IP adress, just use 2 passwords, that way you wont have trouble
Wow I did not expect this thread to have a full blown debate lol. I've been playing MMOs for 10 years now and I'm pretty computer savvy, and never have I ever been hacked...not to say I won't ever, but what are the statistics on how well this system is working compared to other MMOs and how they do it?
That's ironic, because if you'd had a security token for Diablo II (if they existed back then) they probably wouldn't have been able to get into your account.I've only ever had my account hacked once, and it happened in 2000. It was a Diablo II account, and I downloaded something that turned out to be a Trojan from what was in retrospect a very obvious trap.![]()
It's fairly common for massively backed MMO companies to offer authenticators or security tokens. As for their effectiveness? Banks and other secure IT based companies use them. It's highly improbable (Nothing is impossible) to suffer a comprimised account with a security token.Wow I did not expect this thread to have a full blown debate lol. It's been intensly debated topic on other forums (see recent D3 release and it's RMT nightmare.)
The only other email verification method I've seen like this is optional... which I have disabled so...

So put your security token on your keys. Being careless isn't really SE's fault. My old bank got merged with Chase and my CC history isn't in their system (I even went to the bank and had them look it up on their system) from when I played FFXI. When I tried to get my char back for the hermes' boots I was unable to get it b/c I didn't have my FFXI CD key or the FULL CC number. My Bills only had the last 4 digits. Also not SE's fault). If you can't log in, SE asks for your CC info and the CD key you registered with etc. I'm assuming your friend lost that info too. I had the same thought, "what if I lose my token?" Only option now is to make sure its in the same place everyday. I played ffxi on ps2 so I never had a fear of getting hacked. This is my first time playing an mmo on pc so my fear of getting hacked is why I use a token. You clearly admit that you're careless though and don't mind changing PWs. My college makes us change our PWs every 60 days and its annoying!!but getting the token might get you in trouble, me and my friend bought the collectors edition and he used the token, i didnt wanted because im bad remembering stuff, so i was afraid to loose it and not being able to log in, he did use that token and he lost it, he tried to reactivate his account and wasnt able because of the good help center service SE have, everyone that has called there must know what i mean, so he had to start over with my friend pass, so in a few words dont use that token, only if they improve their service that in my experience since FF XI wont happen. Get a token, I don't understand why people are telling the OP to just suck it up and change PWs when you clearly came here to voice your dislike for it.
