As long as the vanity gear follows the same rules as equipping gear for the class/job, I support things like this.

Yes to this idea so much! I remember in beta for an other MMO they actually had invented something a step up from classic MMO "Vanity Slots" in which you'd ripped various pieces of superior gear and installed it into other gear you preferred to wear. So no need to hoard two separate sets of armor. Instead of your "wearing" gear being an illusion, it held the actual stats of higher gear so you could cling to that one piece for as long as you wanted and continuously upgrade it.
Many players loved it and no one had any complaints about not being able to recognize other classes. But during beta the dev's took the system away and the community screamed bloody murder for it back.
Even just the basic "Vanity Slots" would be much appreciated. It helps give players more of a sense of identity and freedom without messing up game play. The good hugely outweighs the bad.I also agree that I don't really think not being able to recognize classes is an actual issue worthy of killing the whole idea. Pretty sure the guy with the sword and shield who insists on being all up the mobs face is the Paladin....

It's not really a matter of class recognition as it is aesthetic. XIV has a very 'grounded fantasy' style, something the art design team has worked very hard to create. Suggestions such as glowy equipment and bikini armor that a number of the users here like to make spit in the face of all that. It's important for the developers to keep their identity, and push the game in the direction they envision and maintain their style, even if they are taking suggestions from the community. Now, I'm okay with vanity slots if it's limited to what the class can already wear, but anything else would ruin the overall aesthetic.
Transmorgification you say?
(I think only a few people will actually get this, tragically. xD)
This was added to WoW not long ago and I don't mind good ideas coming from different games I just see this one kind of pointless for FFXIV. I think it is completely stupid to have something like this in this game especially at the point in time where no gear is a clear cut better than other gear unless it is really something new, and then it always looks better than anything we had before. This worked in WoW because after years upon years of gear sets some people just wanted their old favorite look back and it was in high enough demand.Amongst the bleak landscape of MMORPGs with churning mill style gear progression wherein treasured items Soon Become Obsolete there is at least one game that has solved this problem, even though it took them 7 years to come up with the solution. For from time to time an individual may form an attachment to certain pieces of what we can refer to as Art Assets!
For example consider this:
It looks so cool and yet it is so not cool to wear it In Times of Need.
So how about a player can visit a certain NPC and apply the stats of an Equivalent Piece of Gear to the appearance of a Beloved Piece of Obtained Gear? And thus preserve the hard work of Final Fantasy XIV's talented artists across many generations of Final Fantasy XIV content whilst assuring much excitement amongst the playerbase as they ruminate their cosmetic ..cosmos!
Imagine That.
This game hasn't even really launched yet I would much rather see new gear designs and all the works to come with 2.0 and next gen. content that comes with the game. Also as others have said .dat mods work miracles, I wouldn't mind this feature maybe in 5+ years but anything like this before that would be pointless.

Not The best example BUT DC UNIVERSE ONLINE, has a system where you equip clothes/looks/styles/costumes/colours for your char, Then your equip armor for your stats in a different part of the menu. It's good but does limit what you can wear vs what buffs you.
i liked it there ~ but the game no so much.
