Makes me think of something I posted elsewhere... A villain arc wouldn't make sense, but maybe an anti-hero arc?
We've had our hero arc, now it's time for us to learn to grapple with our power and prestige a bit. Enemies could be targeting us for prestige/fame. Others develop out of fear of our strength. In this sense we can go through an almost batman-like arc where we're unintentionally creating a lot of our own problems just by existing and trying our best to mitigate the harm those problems cause to other people.

Would it not be? Imagine this, if you will.
Vauthry is a truly benevolent leader, and one that has created a paradise akin to the Inn at Journeys Head. People live in comfort and luxury, hoping for some last good days before the true end.
In comes our protagonist, the new Warrior of Darkness. To save the world, he has to bring strife to this paradise, to shatter the comfort. We had something similar just now, by disabling the terminals in the unlost world. The WoD would end up destroying the pillars of the comfortable life of the people of Eulmore, making Vauthry truly desperate, to get them to stand up and rise against them, and in turn, fill the world with chaos, saving it.
Would that not have been awesome?
RIP Viper 28/06/2024 - 30/07/2024. It was a fun month.
No thanks.
I would prefer a more complex story where the WoL intends to do good but instead causes a catastrophe. Our meddling in virtually everything in the world should at some backfire.
An outright villain arc does not interest me whatsoever. Neither does a story where my WoL decides to ignore the advice of all of his friends and insist on a specific path where he has to confront all the scions only to look stupid because he was wrong all along.

Nope. That's just not my personality type. I don't see any appeal in being the bad guy.
Since we ourselves play the ‘Warrior of Light’, wouldn’t it be redundant to try and make them the villain? Everything they do would just seem heroic or ‘good’ because it’s being filtered through our perception. And having them do ‘blatantly villainous’ things would just seem completely out of place.
I can safely say that I indeed would enjoy a villain arc if that means I need to force some heads together out of a life of mundanity, complacency and loafing gaslighting political fires. Idle hands make for the devil's playthings, such and so forth.
Sometimes you have to be the bad guy in order to inspire others to be better, because we can't all pretend to be good; it would double up as a form of self-checking, to make sure that we weren't going down the same path of self-righteousness with all the major villains out of the way (presently), and possibly because we may or may not be in familiar company moving forward in some adventures.

A evil female lala wearing princess dress? I am in for it
I dunno about a villain arc, but I've always wondered if there isn't a world where the people's faith in the WoL could somehow lead to the creation of a Primal. However I don't know if that should be a new entity that we end up fighting against or if the WoL's very nature shouldn't be altered somewhat directly, perhaps subtly at first, to where it starts creating doubts and rifts between us and our friends.
Maybe this isn't how Primal summoning works though, or would at least require a significant timeskip (perhaps due to being lost in a different shard for a time) for the people to grow that desperate. But I have to admit that I don't know if the writers want us to feel like this world is doomed without us, rather it feels like they'd like the message to be that people are good and someone would pick up the mantle, so maybe that's not a good angle? Sorry, I guess this is all a bit rambly.
I do overall feel like the WoL is ... rather terrifying in nature and that it would be a bit of a blemish on what is a very good story to never really do anything more raw with it.
Whilst not a fan of the idea of 'our' Warrior of Light becoming a Villain, I do like the idea of us meeting an Azem shard who didn't follow the path of heroics. We had a teaser, of sorts, of this with Ardert and the Warriors of Darkness when we first met them and didn't have any insight into their backstory.
It would, in my view, be pretty interesting to come across/into conflict with someone who has, essentially, the same gift/power as the Warrior of Light but took a very different path.
While I think something like this is a novel concept, too many people would think their agency is being taken away for this to be feasible.
Maybe something like the HW DRK class quests would be a way to make this work...
