His response is kind of underwhelming.
That he resorted to "can't be ShB/EW everytime" really disappoints me.
Why would he gave the OK if he expected the expansion will be poorly received by the players?
I'm genuinely worried for the game.![]()

Kind of should throw the writers under that bus.YoshiP can't throw his staff under the bus and blame their bad writing for where we're at in the story. It's not good for morale and would just make him look bad to all his staff. There's no way he's this genuinely ignorant on why Wuk Lamat failed. I guess he's instead choosing one thing that won't cause any blame to be thrown on his writing teams ineptitude. It doesn't help, I suppose, that the one thing he chose to address as a reason for her failure is so provably false.
"Write her with more confidence"
How much more can she have? She basically blasts through the challenges with confidence up the butt and faces no push back at all. They should look at how Ryne was written and take some notes I think.
Instead of a "Oh no, you can do better" needs to be more "Do better or else".
It's great they acknowledges the mixed reception but they need to better understand the problems with Wuk Lamat.
Her lack of confidence isn't the problem, it's actually what makes her "human". If she was confident but her other flaws remained, she would remain unpopular.
Just an example, Lyna's breakdown in ShB is a fantastic cutscene, the frustration she experience makes her relatable.
The same way, Wuk Lamat breakdown with a certain kid makes her relatable.
Wuk Lamat is written as the stereotype 'strong but dumb' shonen protagonist, no wonder people compare her to Naruto.
XIV's community has been built and has grown with Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers and Endwalker. Wuk Lamat felt like trying to make a Seinen fan read Fairy Tail or Naruto.
To be fair, if they fully understood what the problem with Wuk Lamat was, the problem wouldn't have been there in the first place. Maybe because they saw the story through all of it's drafts, they have a different view of her than the playerbase who only saw the final version and they don't realize how the final version comes off. This is me being as generous as I'm humanly capable of.
Tbh most of us saw this comming. I don't think any amount of writing on that thing could make me like it. But feel free to try lmao. I'll just be silently waiting for the actual actors to take the stage and her shoved off into some little corner of the unending codex
I feel like the disconnect comes because yoshi isn’t answering the actual problem people have with wuk lamat. The core of her character is……fine (a bit SB lyse but not terrible)
It’s the fact that she is so omnipresent in the story it shoves the other characters aside including the WOL. The only character that manages to cut through her omnipresence is Sphene but zarool ja, bakool ja ja, koana, Otis, erenville and krile all basically got left on the cutting room floor for more wuk lamat.
The story also makes this feel worse because it always funnels us towards her with the samey quest structure of
1) talk to wuk lamat
2) talk to 3 villagers who will tell you about the special villager
3) talk to special villager
4) talk to wuk lamat about special villager and watch a cutscene about wuk lamat
5) talk to wuk lamat again
I would genuinely have next to zero problems with her if she had like 30% less voices lines and 40% less screen time
As a healer main in this game for nigh on 14 years all I can say is that I’m tired. My role has been eroded of complexity and expression for 3 expansions. I’ve watched the tanks do my role for me for 2 expansions and my feedback and critiques continue to fall on deaf ears.
I have no idea who modern healers are designed for but I know now it’s not me. This is the first expansion I’m truly considering dropping the healer role and not returning, so if that was the goal- congratulations I guess
Reading the article it's just fluff, he basicly has a lot of words to say nothing. I don't think they were prepared for this much negative response on Dawntrail and Wuk Lamat in particular.
Don't look back, that's not the way you're going.
It really feels like he didn't play the MSQ, just read the early story concepts and drafts. To be fair, if they fully understood what the problem with Wuk Lamat was, the problem wouldn't have been there in the first place. Maybe because they saw the story through all of it's drafts, they have a different view of her than the playerbase who only saw the final version and they don't realize how the final version comes off. Remember when the community used to boast about having devs that played and knew their own game? What happened?!

I'll admit, despite being in the 'Dawntrail wasn't that bad' camp, I was quite offended by how, despite the exposure she received in the pre-launch promotional material, Krile was treated as a bit of an afterthought. I LIKE Krile and was looking forward to her receiving some attention, and meeting the two Lalafell from the cinematic (since it was painfully obvious they were going to be her parents).I feel like the disconnect comes because yoshi isn’t answering the actual problem people have with wuk lamat. But again, her involvement was minimal and she was treated as a bit of an afterthought - and I found that really disappointing.
