That all depends on your other gear. If you're near the stat caps for STR and VIT, then Ifrit's axe or Garuda's Scream, or even a LT axe from you GC is the best choice prior to getting a relic weapon. If that's not the case, you could add attack power to the axe and make one that could rival any other axe, but again, that depends on your other gear and would take a serious triple meld to make something close to those other axes. Initially I thought you could make an axe that could rival those by adding a solid double meld of attack power, but after reevaluating things I think it's probably best if you make a tanking axe and go for enmity of one of those bad boys, and use a primal axe or GC axe for DD.

IMO, if you're daring go for a triple meld using two tier IIIs and a tier IV Touch of Rage. For tanking you'd have trouble finding a better axe than that.

    Tanking: +Enmity
DD: Get a Primal/Lt Axe instead (Otherwise, meld +ATK to it)

Molly if someone isn't near the stat cap wouldn't it be better to focus on strength instead of at power?

    Depends on your gear.

You have to get at least 50AP on your axe for it to be better than an Ifrit's Axe under stat caps and 60+ at stat caps to be better than Ifrit's.

However, Moogle and Garudas (Obviously) are going to be better for tanking and DD any time you gain from their accuracy and the ability to use other gear to cap your stats.

For example, if in one gearset you needed 36ACC from rings to have a manageable hit rate with Ifrit's, but your STR was at 315, Moogle would be better because you could then use 36STR rings and cap. This is sort of obvious, but a big thing that people overlook when talking about melding these axes. There's not much stuff you can roll into without that 30-36acc somewhere, and often you need to swap out a STR ring anyway, even using Moogle axe. (In this scenario, Moogle is still better)

However, all things considered, while under cap if you put a TIV 20STR on a Giantsgall Axe, then it is indeed better than Ifrit but still not better than Moogle for the above mentioned reasons.

Edit: I would also point out that, if you are currently stat capped, but not accuracy capped, a TIV STR meld can allow you to use an Electrum Ring+1 and this would also be good.
