There is a reason why Skyrim modders are talking about remaking Oblivion in Skyrim, and have done things like implementing Dark Souls combat in Skyrim, modernizing UI to look like stuff from top third person action games like Jedi Survivor, or writing deep stories like Vigilant that is similar to a fully fleshed out version of the DRK Lv30-50 questline. And just look at any screenshot of modern Skyrim. It looks more next gen than actual next gen titles. Because Skyrim players want them.

We don't have any of that in FF14 and it's not just because it's an online game. There's no texture overhauls to make the landscapes look pristine or to make forests feel denser. There's no UI overhaul that makes you feel like you're playing an action game. There's no writing overhaul to reimagine the storyline or to fix plotholes. All of these can be done with the engine since it's all client-sided. The official devs also have like no incentive to modernize the game because FF14 players genuinely don't know better. They don't know what the potential can be.
