Originally they didn't even have proper wards. That was quite possibly the worst idea ever.

- NPC repairs only went to 75% and durability melted away like butter in the sun.
- You had to gather about 10 ingredients for a simple shortsword
- To craft a lvl5 sword you had to be lvl20(?) crafter
- You had to actually check every retainer in those wards to find an item
- No MP recovery

75%? Before that, it only went to 50%. And it cost 25,000 gil

And a lvl 48 gladiator wore lvl 5 gear because it took ages to level up a craft..and ages to level up all the secondary crafts you needed..and ages to get the 46 different ingredients you needed for a new set of equipment.
