Role Quest Ranking and Review (Spoilers)

So I finished all of the role quests. It seems there isn't one that ties them together yet. Sadge.

Anyway, let's talk about them. Some of the role quests were pretty endearing, while others were completely forgettable outside of a few moments.

    I rank them thus:

    1. Melee
    2. Tank
    3. Healer
    4. Ranged
    5. Caster

Melee role quest involved going after a Far Eastern Ninja, who stole a totem from a Turali village that allows one to access a Vidraal's power of shapeshifting. We are sent to Kugane to team up with a huntress named I'Toca. The Ninja has been going about the Far East, posing as different people to try and stir up war and chaos and best friends to kill each other. Every time we encounter the Ninja, the huntress foils his shapeshifting whereupon he turns into a bird and flies away. She's supposed to be a pre-eminent archer, but she misses every time, nearly killing a Namazu each time instead. Half way through, the Ninja gets the wise idea to impersonate the WoL, which doesn't go too well for them. He then tries posing as the huntress, attempting to use the WoL's trust to stab us in the back. He is foiled by the huntress shoulder tackling him into the dirt. Just before this point, the huntress is revealed to not be I'toca, and instead, this same tactic was used to kill the real I'toca. In the final slew of quests, the Ninja has made his way to Azim Steppe to impersonate tribal leaders, trying to draw the Steppe into a war with Doma. His final identity theft is that of Sadu, which he leverages against Magnai in a seduction ploy. He succeeds in seducing Magnai, but is foiled by Magnai being unwilling to raise a hand against the WoL because the WoL is the Khagan of the Steppe. In the final battle, the Ninja is able to transform into the ninetailed fox auspice and use its full power against WoL and the huntress. Beaten, he turns bird again, but in the end the huntress finally lands her shot. Ninja lives and is imprisoned by the Oronir.

Tank role quest involves an ex-Ishgardian dame knight who was infamous for using ruthless tactics. She's stolen an idol that allows her to steal the wakefulness from people, putting them to sleep, and allowing her to stay awake without sleep. It turns out to be an aetheric mechanism, and the sleep can be permanent coma. WoL teams up with a couple that used to be the protectors of the idol. They protected it 24/7 by the guy taking the girl's wakefulness. Ex-Knight is using the idol to sow chaos around Ishgard, seeking to ruin the reputation of the Temple Knights. WoL and the Turalis team up with the Zundu Vanu Vanu whose Sundrop Dances can reinvigorate even those who've had their wakefulness stolen. In the end, WoL sacrifices themself to prevent the Turali man from getting put to sleep and is hit with the idol's effect. This is easily reversed after the ex-knight is defeated.

Healer role quest involves a Hotlander that's after a Midlander that stole an idol that purifies poison to the point of neutralizing naturally venomous creatures. The idol can also be used to create potent poisons. Hotlander's tribe uses it to continue living in an area where everything is extremely toxic. Midlander is using it to sow chaos around Limsa Lominsa, basically giving people the equivalent of food poisoning and the runs. She has a Lalafell partner who is a goldsmith, and they employ a ton of mammets to do most of their fighting for them. Their eventual plan winds up being to make a potent poison and put it into the fresh water source on Vylbrand, poisoning the entire island, Limsa and Kobolds all. I assume Sahagin don't need freshwater, so they would be less effected. Midlander is mostly doing this because she loves playing practical jokes on people, and wants to give the entire island diarrhea for a couple of weeks just for the lulz. Hotlander can't let this stand, and also turns out to be partially immune to toxins.

    7/10

Ranged role quest involves an idol that could impart a nearly impenetrable shield onto multiple people. It was stolen by a guy who wanted to bring down the rich and wealthy, and he opts to do this by buffing his bandit band with the Boar's Blessing and having them raid Ala Mhigan merchant caravans. The WoL teams up with a female Mamool Ja, who informs WoL that the guy disguised himself as a merchant when he stole the idol. These two inform the Ala Mhigan military who start to setup ways to catch the guy. Eventually this leads to a confrontation where it's found out that there is a Mamool Ja in the bad guy's band, and the girl Mamool Ja convinces him he's being manipulated and to rebel. Quest line ends with bad guy getting his hand on some Magitek Reapers for his band and the WoL, along with his Mamool Ja comrades, just hitting them and their barriers until they break. Barrier buff and cracking effect was kinda cool.

    6/10

Caster sees WoL teaming up with a Miqote from Shaaloani. She's wearing some FF12 gear. The guy who stole her idol is some BRD wearing DRG gear that wants to be a superhero. Apparently he's a rich kid from Thavnair. The idol has a mysterious power that only triggers when the user is attacked. All BRD can get it to do is throw big rocks at people. He's stirring unrest around Thavnair. Also occasionally saving people around Thavnair, but also he usually set up the people he saved by using alchemy to replicate morbols and baby monsters he could easily beat by hitting them with rocks. WoL and Miqote team up and bring him down, the Miqote incidentally stripping him naked by breaking his armor. There is a neat scene where WoL as a caster channels aether through a rock to determine if dude can just create rocks out of thin air or not. You get a dialogue option on the mechanism you use to cast spells. Options are Channel Aether, Incant spells, or just do it, more or less.

    5.5/10

All in all they weren't terrible quests, but I find myself unable to recall character names of the new introduced NPCs both hero and villain alike, except my most recently completed one, which was melee's. I also think Melee's did the best at prior game/character integration. I hope to see more of Kuiyki. What'd you think?

I see you rated them by the story, and not by player interaction. Healer goes a lot lower for turning the entire chain into "Esuna this dude. Esuna this dude." all the way into the final battle where you still have to Esuna, and by the Twelve, will the game yell at you about that with their stupid red text they're obsessed with. And ranged goes right around that point for "Shoot the shield" the fight...

I do agree with your story placements, though.

I did the Ranged questline first and was certain it was setting up a romance between the 2 Mamool Ja characters, especially after they blue ball you from actually fighting the Mamool Ja mercenary twice in the questline.

The caster quest had the only part in DT that made me laugh out loud where they meme on the "villain escaping" shtick when she throws the rock at the dust cloud.

My honest opinion is that, just like with the EW quests, it feels they focused on making a questline first, and add the role supposed to do said questline last. Aside from very niche "identities" glued on to explain why they need someone of certain role specifically, really any role should be able to do any of those quests. For example, the healer one needing you to Esuna all the time but then the quest itself says just about anyone with an antidote could heal the poisons, so you being a healer is redundant when you could as well be a NIN carrying some potions. At no point do you actually need to heal anyone.

so apparently the only option that doesn't "stress the newbies" is either pressing 1211111111, or do nothing at all.

Did find the tank one to be the most forgettable.

    Ranged was wholesome.

    Caster and healer were funny.

And yeah the melee one were the one that displayed the most stakes, while still keeping the humor. It also contains the only villain that had actually committed murder.

Personal wish was that at least one of them had started off with the villain just handing us the totem cause they wouldn't dare cross the WoL.

Feels like the EW ones should have been held back until you hit the point where ragnarock had to be fixed. And then used the job questline as a breather to check out the other city states and return to a ready space-ship.

    I liked the caster one.
Tepeke is a treasure and what for me what Wuk Lamat should have been.
A young upstart with potential who we help out but who also does her own thing and is competent.

I don’t mind the role quests being more lax and funny for a change. I pesonall didn’t like the EW ones because at least this time the game TRIED to give me a reason why it needed a caster (she tells us that she would tank and we would unleash hell).

They give me a bit of an adventure vacation feeling.

Do I want every role quest like this in the future? No, absolutely not.
But I like them for what they are and they quite fit into what DT tried to be unsuccessfully. A lower stake adventure.

Haven’t done all of them though.
