A very large portion - not all, but many - of the mentors do it for an ego boost. So, forgive me for not caring if people want it for that specific reason.
are there really people so bad at the game that comms inflate their ego ?
I thought it was Heal/Tank Comm each other and DPS/DPS Comm each other. It's how I've always done it. :c
I actually received some commendations yesterday playing MCH. I was the top dps so I think they were happy to see that.

If my dungeon run is cleared at an above average speed (as in noticably skipping final mechanics) you can bet that the com will fly to one of the dps in that case (ngl the prettier portrait wins if it's an all-tie, it iz what it iz..)
I commend based on portrait customization, class is secondary

I give commendations to people who do something really well. Like the insane BLM I saw last night who clearly knew the fight inside and out and didn't move a single pixel more than they needed to. That was impressive. Or the SMN who managed to save our hides on the first boss of Alexandria after most people dropped dead to mechanics.
For most people, all that matters is if you're an Au Ra or catgirl in a skimpy outfit on your portrait.

I always comm a dps. They have a more complicated rotation and fewer defensives by default, and their effort greatly affects completion time.
