The fact that we have to pay a monthly fee and an expansion fee just to watch a new movie every few years, while all core systems remain unchanged is unhinged. I don't know how people defend XIV's monetization model. AND there's a cash shop! And a SUBSCRIPTION to more storage--we literally already have a worse version of GW2's bag slot.

And yet, the two biggest MMOs and longest running both run on subscription models while all those F2P models either struggle to survive or have massive whale communities spending vastly more than a subscription on a regular basis. Combine the populations of WoW and FF14 and I'd say 50 million subscribers disagree.

I don't mind subscription if at least 60% of the money is going to the game

But the current state isn't even close to 10%

I mean, look at the top 5 most played MMO :
    1) WoW : 20 years old
    2) FFXIV : 12 years old (counting 1.0)
    3) BDO : 9 years old (KR release)
    4) GW2 : 11 years old
    5) ESO : 10 years old

MMO is almost a dead genre.
It's not worth develloping a new one (a lot of promising ones stopped their dev because nobody wanted to fund them anymore)
Nah, it's not a dying genre. They just take a lot of time and money to develop which makes it excruciatingly hard to compete with, let alone against, the titans of the genre.

All this means is that it'll become a niche genre again, and honestly I think that will likely be better in the long run.

In fact, from player point of view, true it does.... But from the point of view of NCSoft : Not it doesn't.
5 years ago NCSoft fired 143 peoples in ANet while promising that it wouldn't affect GW2.

In the end, thoses lay off + Covid delayed patch and the next expansion to a point where ANet delivered half-baked and low quality content for a while, and they decided to change their historical model, which was very close to FFXIV : One big extansion every 2 years with story patch in between (Living World)
Npw they will release expansion more often, but thoses expansion will contain half (maybe less) content as the previous one.... Meaning : you'll have to buy an expansion more often.

Also if im not mistaken Square Enix doesnt give FF14 much of a budget so i doubt a new MMRPG would help in that regard.

GW2 is doing fine financially. We have some data on this via NCSoft financial reports. Expansions are effectively just a cost-neutral lure for people to buy stuff from the gem store. This is why it was so disastrous for them to go so long without a launch (IBS), and why NCSoft kinda pushed their hand into making EoD.

I don't know that the one year mini-expansions are going to maintain interest, but my take on the matter is that they're just a content stop-gap while developing GW3. Relatively low-cost features that fans have been begging for (even though they aren't necessarily good ideas, like housing and raids).

Also, SotO was like $25? Two months of an FFXIV sub even without factoring in the XIV expansion cost divided out over three years.

MMOs are expensive and Square Enix does not have a good track record with live service game, they put like 10 on a graveyard within a single year. I wouldn't be excited for a new updated FF MMO, because I don't think I have any faith in Square Enix to make it again. If it weren't for how powerful the brand of FF was, 1.0 would have been 6 feet under and we wouldn't have seen this MMO out.

Depends what you mean by "updating".
