I wouldn't say the MMO genre is dead. The problem is that MMOs tried to be everything to everyone, and that just doesn't work. When WOW switched from what it was up to WoTLK to the mobile clicker it is today, it alienated a large part of its fandom. XIV is still in a comparatively good position because it has so many rides in its theme park, but you can tell from the constant conflict between the more casual folks who want to dive into a fantasy world and chill with their friends, and the more competitive audience who finds content too easy, that the people playing this are more diverse in their interest than XIV in any phase of its development has been "made for" specifically.

I'd guess the future of MMOs is the smaller niche game that caters to a specific audience and sticks to it, rather than the Happy Meal model the older ones tried to be. But the genre itself isn't dead.

FFXI is a better game than FFXIV, especially on servers with a 75 cap and no trusts.

XIV will not have that same longevity after the population shrinks. What would you even do? Run the same raid over and over and over and over until the servers give out? Most people already have nothing to do a week or two after a non-Savage patch.

What do you mean by 'older ones'? MMOs pre-WoW were an extremely niche genre. Hopefully we can head back that way.

The success of FFXIV was a miracle
I don't think Square Enix can do any intresting game anymore it is not 2010

To me I am waiting for respectable companies like Capcome and Riot games to do something to the genre
... what, the CEO of SE wanted this, and was sacked.

A new MMO would only work if it’s developed by a team other than CBU3. Just look at FF16—it took many of the less favorable aspects of 14 and put them into a single-player game. If CBU3 were to create another MMO, it would likely end up being just 14 with a different coat of paint. Just like how 14 originally wanted to be like 11.

A new MMO isn't the answer.

    My thoughts:

    - The subscription model is one of many reasons that the game is not filled with potty mouth kids (adults to).. so I would not get rid of it.

    - FFXIV should just split off from Square, keep all it's own money and use it to make the game better rather than keep giving it back to Square to waste it.

    - The FFXIV game engine is definately at it's limits. This is more obvious when you realize a swing on your house doesn't move, or the back door to your house doesn't let you in. Or when mods make the game ten times better and they tell us not to use them so you end up just waiting for things to get better.

    - I think MMOs will never die as a type of game, it's just become much more rare that good ones can get made. Companies are into alphas, betas and whatever other word that means never going to finish because they want that money fast. MMOs can strike it rich, but it takes ambition, patience and talent. These are not as common in today's culture probably because everything is so convenient.

MMORPGs take a lot of time to develop, and a lot of money, and a lot of work to put into content and whatnot, let's not start on needing servers and maintaining them.

The subscription based model is fine. The only thing I'd complain about is the fact that retainers is also an extra subscription which is quite vile.

GW2 for example is not subscription based, but will inconvenience you alot in terms of inventory space and QoL and storage. If you wanted these QoL you have to either grind (and they've been nerfing alot of the farm areas, rest in peace Istan farm, under the pretense that they know better and don't want you to be spending all your time there), so, you either grind for hours to get an upgrade or you open that wallet up.

If it's not subscription it'll be cash shop heavy and at times that cash shop won't be just 'uwu cosmetics and qol'.

This game won't shut down since it's in their best interest to keep it running so they milk it to fund other products. I don't believe much gets poured back into this game. They've been playing it 'safe' for years, taking the same MSQ formula, copy pasting it for every expansion. I don't believe they'd take risk with another MMO when this one hasn't died yet.

I do believe they might be choking their golden goose. I find the state of this graphical update unacceptable, especially with the lack of care given to the player characters' expressions and the bugs in the enviornment.

A cunning business scheme to shut down one of the two biggest and most financially successful MMOs on the market, I see, I see.

GW2 system is the perfect kind of system that fits all worlds

FFXIV doesn't deserve 12$ a month it's contant is lacking engagement and systems are redundant with as little innovation.

Half of Dawntrail story for example could be a beast tribe quest

Why as a player have to pay for such a story?

You could say we have gameplay.. but what are the unique changes to gameplay? Jobs are the same combat mechanic the same

FFXIV should be f2p with QoL subscription

If I had a [single unit of currency] for every time I’d seen one of these ‘gaMe dEaD’ threads I’d be the richest man in the world. Happens literally every expansion. and every time I end up posting in the thread saying ‘I’ve been seeing this same thread every expansion since like 3.0 lol’
