I have some misgivings about it. If the quests end up as repetitive go collect 20 bear butts for some smuck who cant be asked to do it him self then i could have a problem with it, its the same problem i had with the nature of the leve system.

But if they do make it so you are following a pretty nifty story including boss battles and other kinds of tom foolery then thats ok. Ie in ff7 when you get done with the midgard stuff you are about level 20 or so (pulling numbers out of my ass here). The problem then is having enough stuff to do to take players from 1-20 20-40 40-50+ for every combat class including extra side stuff to dick around and have extra fun with.

I do have some misgivings in this regard, I can't really tell internally if there legitimate concerns or if this is just my inner gamer lashing out at change.

it often (in most MMorpgs these days) turns out to be a quick soloable thing..

in WoW, Warhammer and co. you can also share your quests with others but many dont do so. because for what do you need a party, when you can do it also solo and you dont have to "waste" your time with forming a group.

well lets see what kind of quests FFXIV offers..

RPG Site: Will speed runs be kept for version 2.0? It seems a lot of people on the forums are not in favor of that type of content, especially when having to go back to content you already played through before.
Yoshida: Speed runs will remain in the game (for achievement purposes), however, they will no longer be necessary to obtain equipment upgrades. Expect the reward system for these runs to change greatly.

Also like to point out, that these quests are being created by people who excel in Final Fantasy like storytelling. Even in modern MMO's today, they make ways for quests to feel more dynamic. Of course you are going to get those pick up ones, but they were able to nicely blend it in with the main content. It is good to have calm phase quests and dynamic phase. Too much excitement in questing can wear a player out. The small time quests help give you a breather into the next portion of the main storyline.

Its only opinion, but I don't see how people favor grinding over interacting with the world. When I grind, I feel like I am doing a chore, not playing a game. Even in FFXI, I got so tired of it I played other games while leveling. If an MMO influences me to do other outside the game activities while leveling, then the MMO has failed to hook me in to the leveling experience.

Star Wars may be failing, but it kept my interest directly with it's leveling content from 1 to 50 non-stop. Exciting from the beginning to the end and was paced very well. Too bad end game is lousy. WoW's more recent content even had me feeling engaged to the content from start to finish.

Grinding however to me is only an outdated way of getting levels. It worked for FFXI's time, but it doesn't work as well today. Only FFXI players and current FFXIV players look upon grinding for levels. I can tell you, most people who are MMO players and not just FFXI/FFXIV players who come in will not embrace the idea of sitting in one spot all day killing mobs. They will expect to have content thrown at them from 1 to 50. Yoshida understands this and knows that quests are the better solution to hook your major audience in. He knows that major audience will just get bored with it and move to an MMO that has a better time engaging them. If anything, I believe this is the key to hook the major audience in. Simple grinding I believe would kill that wide audience they are hoping to achieve.

None of that is fact, it is just how I compare grinding to quests.

For people that wonders about quest/event-driven levelling, take a look at guild wars 2 and how they handle levelling.

Basically as you explore the world, you are presented with multiple events in various areas. When you were suppose to go from camp A to Camp B in 30min, it might ended up taking 3 hours because while you travel there, you are presented with multiple dynamic events where a group of bandits are raiding a farm nearby threatening to steal their pigs (kill xxx bandits quest), when you are done you might meet with bunch of cults passing by spreading curse or travelling monks asking for assistance to guide them to their temple (guide NPC quest).

It's alot of fun and creative way to levelling, you don't even feel like a grind because the world feel alive.

    1) You have no idea how the questing will be like

    2) This is a Final Fantasy Game, their Storytelling is usually awesome

    3) Questing will have those X Y and Z type quest, probably 100% certain there will be some quests that are like that, which is fine. However, like I said on #2, this is a Final Fantasy game, I bet 3/4s of the quests will be engaging storylines.. and hell even could connect with the main storyline even.

    4) Gamescom will show us what type of questing there will be Probably, since it is Gameplay, and if there main focus is this Questing, then they will show it @ Gamescom. (17th-18th of THIS MONTH!! YAY!!)

    5) Grinding through mobs will still be in the game, they never said they were taking it out, so you can still get a group of friends and grind to your hearts content on Open World Mobs.

I'm glad to hear they're essentially doing away with the speed run aspect. I never understood why everything had to be timed in this game. I even remember one quest I did that was just an outdoor instanced area and it was like "You have 30 minutes to complete this" and all I had to do was run 15 steps and talk to an NPC.

Yay for new info but I don't think my appetite will be satiated until I see gameplay videos of male miqotes

    Masato Kato, please.
You sir, know talent when you see it~

Mitsuda and Kato would be fantastic for this game~

I will, and you should let me know when you get as bored of "stand around one camp killing the same mobs over and over again" as I am. Grind is grind, quests are just another form.
