If you story skip before you get your GC membership

I rashly skipped a brand new character, having run a number of others normally through to DawnTrail. But then, hold on, I didn't think beforehand how I might be able to become a Sion, get retainer'd, GC'd and chocoboed if not going through MSQ. Anyone know what I'd need to do? Is there a point at which it might get resolved?

You join the GC of your starting city if you use a story skip. Retainers and the Chocobo are unlocked through blue quest,

While related to the MSQ progression, those were quests done as basically story side quests (Blue quest marker icon).
So, to get those, just go to the related quest NPCs (at the locations they would be at at the points of unlock during the MSQ) and do those quest (which are just mostly talking to NPCs and hitting a couple beginning zones)
Just look up the quests by Googling "Whatever" Unlock (like Retainers Unlock, Chocobo Unlock, etc...) for sites that show the NPCs names and locations, plus the steps needed to complete.

As genuine_stranger stated, your starting character job will determine which starting city's Grand Company you will be auto-joined to with a MSQ Skip, however, you will be a buck-private and will need to perform the GC requirements to rank up and unlock the additional GC content.

Also, a lot of the quest rewards, should you need them, are with the calamity salvager under quest rewards.

The story skip automatically unlocks some but not all of the blue-quest-unlocked game features. IIRC you'll already have your chocobo but need to do the extra quest for it to join you in battle, and there's a good chance that retainers will be unlocked as well.

Yeah, a ton gets unlocked with a story skip.

Look up the official site for story skips and level skips
