Hey! Viper survived longer than DT monk!
Hey! Viper survived longer than DT monk!
I took a look at the JP Viper thread again and the opinions are getting more mitigated, we have some hope
I had so much fun with VPR, as a NIN main, giving me something to keep refreshed that actually did damage (I still miss the upkeep of the Huton gauge, odd as that may be), and now it just.... well. It's like NIN. There's not considerable reason to swap up your basic combo. It was a new class that I actually enjoyed as a secondary when I couldn't play my main, and now I'm just sad about it. Unlikely as it may be, I'd love them to change it back.
Don't ask me, ask SE XD
I have no stake in this outside just playing the game.
I'm somewhere in the middle about these changes, not for, but not against them either, cause I doubt I'll be playing Viper that much outside leveling it.

I haven't touched viper yet so I don't really have a horse on this race. However, I have compiled the feedback from several of my friends which amounts to: The unique combo structure was what made VPR fun. If you remove the unique combo structure, which is an aspect that people liked, why even bother making new classes?
At that point, just delete all jobs and make a single TANK, HEALER, PHYS RANGED, MAGI RANGED, MELEE DPS classes. It really is that simple. A job that had a lot of potential, squandered because the game designers keep listening to the players who don't even engage with battle content above dungeon level.
Yoshida says he'll look at job diversity/job identity stuff for 8.0 but if the immediate reaction to any deviation is to completely change the loop of a NEW JOB THAT HASN'T BEEN OUT FOR A MONTH, I have zero hope that there will ever be any interesting job now and in the future.
Personally, when I tested Viper and Pictomancer for myself, it took me a bit to get what they were going for. It challenged me, because I had no idea what I was doing. Even after hitting the dummies for a bit I felt like I was missing something, and I said "Okay, I'll try again later."
People that can't hit 1-2-3 on their keyboard to save their life WON'T play viper (or picto) even after the changes. Stop making decisions around them because they're moaning in the forums.
Oh yeah, they even removed the damage over time effect for the VIPER JOB, you know, like snakes, that are meant to be venomous? That bite down on stuff and inject poison? Yeah, those snakes. Removing the poison from the snake job shows us how commited they are to the 8.0 "job identity" changes. Unbelievable.

People with room-temperature IQs couldn't hack it. I'm an idiot, and I figured it out. They have NO excuse. They've ruined one of the most fun jobs ever because of a bunch of dumdums. GG. I'll go level Dragoon again I guess. ffs.
What the hell Square?
Great, you listened about the positionals, but then you blindside us with this nonsense instead. Who asked for this? I certainly didn't, no one I know asked for this, the forums at large said nothing about this, instead asking for the overall flow to remain unchanged.
So again; what the hell? "Managing of its combo routes" it's literally press the glowing button, there was nothing to manage. The only thing the combos really asked of you was "do you reapply Noxious yet or do the bigger damage button?" and instead it was replaced with another "press the glowing button".
The job is barely a month old and Square thought we were having too much fun apparently. I don't have the desire to level it beyond what I've already got it at if this is how Square is going to treat it. Why bother learning it when they'll just gut it.
And you get a jump. And YOU get a jump. AND YOU get a jump! JUMPS FOR EVERYONE!
This is why SE needs to introduce community polls to approve/disapprove changes like this, how Runescape does it.
Clown shit.
The frustrating thing is we literally have evidence how the viper change was not needed. People were not failing at viper, they were playing it en masse but they were not failing at it compared to other jobs. People failing at picto or black mage were far behind optimal damage output but for viper that range was just about as large as for other melees, on the smaller end even, despite being an entirely new job and despite having the largest number of people playing it.
I waited to comment until I could log in and try it out. I felt DREAD reading the patch notes, but after playing the only dread gone are my beloved dread skills.
I immediately fell in love with Viper because it had a great class fantasy of injecting venom and maintaining the effect throughout the fight to "weaken" the enemy.
Mechanically it was also fun to manage these timers. As others said if they needed this easier for some reason, why not just increase to 30 seconds/1 minute?
Feel sad and disheartened now, as a core part of the experience is just now completely gone.
