Thancred's new face

bumping... happy dawntrail ea anniversary! the first thing i did when i could log in was i watched some thancred cutscenes in the unending journey. i watched one life, one world, so i saw updated wotm. i didn't know the general tells for what faces had been updated (the teeth are actually a huge giveaway), so i had hope that thancred was looking good and like himself. and then i watched cutscenes from shadowbringers... if i'm honest about how upset i was, i know trolls that come across this thread would mock me, but needless to say i was really distraught. it's something i considered ending my sub over, in all honesty. that's not thancred. i don't care that it's been a year. there's still plenty of graphical updates they need to fix for player characters. i'm going to hold onto hope that they'll revisit npcs, too.

We know graphical updates have been mentioned for 7.3, so maybe there's a sliver of hope. I still plan on raising an official bug report if we don't see changes this patch, as I think it's been long enough now (and the fact that other NPCs have been updated faithfully makes this MUCH more of an anomaly now).

Just throwing in another comparison as somebody kindly allowed us to use their Emet screenshots from before and after his graphical update.

We have started to see other NPC models updated in recent patches. Examples of these characters include Aymeric, Emet-Selch and Lyse, all of whom have custom faces.

The updates to these characters have been very faithful, keeping their appearances intact and ensuring that they look like the characters people love and remember.

Below is a comparison of Emet-Selch, Aymeric and Thancred before and after the graphical update, so you can see them side-by-side. Emet-Selch and Aymeric look virtually identical to their pre-graphical update selves, whereas Thancred did not keep his appearance. The 'before' images are on the left, and the 'after' images are on the right.



If other NPCs can be updated with this level of fidelity, I believe that Thancred deserves the same attention to detail, respecting his previous appearance in line with the aims of the graphical update itself.

It's like he went to an aesthetician, got some fillers and his nose fixed. He's a fighter which I assume was why the nose was originally chosen to be kind of bumpy (he's been hit a lot). He looked rough because he was rough and had a rough life. People are only commenting on the chin and nose, but the eyes seem more narrow and dull to me than before? I always felt Thancred's eyes stood out the most and now it's his nose and lips.

It’s really striking when you see them all side by side like that and realize just how much poor Thancred has changed. If he was just a random NPC, maybe it could go unnoticed, but this is one of the main cast! He deserves the same amount of attention as the others got! His eyes, nose and mouth are all completely different. (And naysayers, please, trace the shapes if you can’t see it at a glance…)

I still haven’t seen Hien since the update and I’m afraid to… lol

i've noticed this as well. his new eyes look super sunken in and dead, like theres no life to them at all (which one could argue that they add to his depression in a way, but theyre so noticeable to one who knows his pre dawntrail face extremely well and really pays attention to him)

Are we sure that image of emet-selch isn't the same picture? I can't tell the difference. Even the hair looks like the same quality.

Best way to tell is the ear, it's slightly more rounded in the second version - and his eye is a little brighter. But yes, they look extremely similar!

Preliminary patch notes are out, and no mention of changes to NPC faces this time Looks like I will have to create that bug report after all...
