The GPU used can hardly handle the resolution, 2880×1800 is not something to sneeze at. Most single core GPUs can't handle that resolution for gaming at acceptable frames. You usually need 2 GPUs to stay at a constant 60FPS

I'm fully aware that the gpu can't handle the resolution. That's why i asked what the point was.

Really? I'm doing the exact same thing as you right now and my game still clunks around a little. But I guess I'm still impressed it works halfway decent. ha
These arguments that you should not use a mac for gaming, or the uselessness of retina display, pscht. A laptop is multi-functional. That is, if a game can potentially run on it, then play it! Consider a laptop must also be used, by most people, for business or school, things in which mac excels.
I have a gaming PC, but not everyone is so lucky. Discrimination against macs is useless. Appreciate that they are popular and games can be played on them. Do not sip what they call hatorade.![]()
Um, here's the thing. OS X is a useless piece of trash for playing games until Apple decides to care about it. You're 2/3rds of the way there though. All you have to do is hit the Install button under Boot Camp though. lol
They are using bootcamp, as they said in the post you quoted.
I too am using bootcamp, but support gaming on all platforms.![]()

One of the reasons for this is unless you're using a Mac Pro tower case, you most likely have mobile graphics if you're on any kind of Mac. People simply don't buy macs to play hardcore games. Those that do have the most expensive ones (which cost about half as much if they are Windows PCs). Don't get me wrong, I actually like Mac OSX's design. I don't like Apple and their hardware choices however. Chic and stylish at the expense of practicality. Nearly every PC game also available on mac performs measurably worse under OSX than under windows. Thus it ends up being better to boot camp and play the Windows version even if you have a high end Mac and the game is available for OSX. Too many people look at the system requirements for games on Mac and think they'll be fine when they're not- Usually the system requirements are desktop hardware and most macs use mobile hardware.
Given FFXIV's current popularity, I'd say an OSX client is extremely unlikely. Not trying to rain on your parade, just being realistic.
Macs, they just werks!
I also set my native resolution on Windows using Bootcamp to be 1920x1200. If I set it at 2880x1800, everything is REALLY small and I can't see it even though it's utilizing all the pixels. That's because I do things like surf the web while I'm playing and I want to be able to read without squinting. But yea it would be ridiculous if a laptop was able to handle those resolutions for gaming. Not even gonna try it because I don't want it to explode.
Also, even Mac OS X doesn't let you use full 2880x1800 unless you have a program but they programmed it so that certain elements take advantage of the full amount of pixels. But I am glad technology is headed in the right direction by increasing resolution on laptops.
