    FFXIV for Mac

Are there any plans for bringing this game to Mac OS X?

I'm using Bootcamp with my Retina MBP at the moment (runs great with standard settings) and know there are other ways to run it such as with Wine or Parallels but would much rather prefer something supported.

I'm glad to see that now a MBP, for the 3K$ it's worth, is able to run such a heavy game on decent settings. It used to annoy me not to be able to properly play GTA IV on my older one. Well, why not a portage, when they eventually publish the game on PC/PS3.

One of the reasons for this is unless you're using a Mac Pro tower case, you most likely have mobile graphics if you're on any kind of Mac. People simply don't buy macs to play hardcore games. Those that do have the most expensive ones (which cost about half as much if they are Windows PCs). Don't get me wrong, I actually like Mac OSX's design. I don't like Apple and their hardware choices however. Chic and stylish at the expense of practicality. Nearly every PC game also available on mac performs measurably worse under OSX than under windows. Thus it ends up being better to boot camp and play the Windows version even if you have a high end Mac and the game is available for OSX. Too many people look at the system requirements for games on Mac and think they'll be fine when they're not- Usually the system requirements are desktop hardware and most macs use mobile hardware.

Given FFXIV's current popularity, I'd say an OSX client is extremely unlikely. Not trying to rain on your parade, just being realistic.

$3K to run this game on decent settings? Wow what a huge rip off, I paid £600 for my laptop 1 year ago and I can run FFXIV on decent settings, if I take a 1.5 exchange rate that's about $900, a huge saving of $2,100, I think I'll get a new phone, new TV, go on Holiday and still have money left over.

Seriously how can you guys possibly rationalize that price difference for a picture of a half eaten apple?

Yup, fan may be a bit loud but it keeps the CPU under 90 degrees. My settings when testing were 1600x900, standard everything, 60 fps, shadow on, dust effects on, extended drawing on, physics on. Those settings let it run really smooth but turning off the extra stuff would make it even smoother.

This laptop actually runs FFXIV better than my desktop.

I can see it being ported to OS X due to having such limited different hardware variations Apple has for their products so they have less things to test for compatibility.

The issue would be porting everything to OpenGL, they've had a hard time with directx, which is surely to change with the new engine but going to something completely different might just cause more problems. I'm not sure how well they would handle that API.

Another issue would be driver compatibility, we all know both nvidia & amd are lacking when it comes to support on OS X for their drivers.

I hope they consider it. I know my school, like most other universities and colleges, give big student discounts on macs. That's tens and hundreds of thousands of young potential players who mostly use mac these days. Its probably better they don't though, or else we would play when we should be studying. -_-
