People shouldn't use Mac for gaming.
Companies know that there ARE potential clients on mac, but not nearly enough to justify making a port.
For that reason there are nearly no Mac games.

It can also be in reverse too, if there were more games on OSX more people would buy macs.
Same applies to Linux, which may change with what Valve & Steam are trying to do.

What's the point of a retina display if you're running the game at 1600x900?

The GPU used can hardly handle the resolution, 2880×1800 is not something to sneeze at. Most single core GPUs can't handle that resolution for gaming at acceptable frames. You usually need 2 GPUs to stay at a constant 60FPS

I'm fully aware that the gpu can't handle the resolution. That's why i asked what the point was.

The GPU can handle it. It's the same as using 2x Super-Sampling AA. That's the point of the retina display. To make pixels impossible to distinguish.

I also set my native resolution on Windows using Bootcamp to be 1920x1200. If I set it at 2880x1800, everything is REALLY small and I can't see it even though it's utilizing all the pixels. That's because I do things like surf the web while I'm playing and I want to be able to read without squinting. But yea it would be ridiculous if a laptop was able to handle those resolutions for gaming. Not even gonna try it because I don't want it to explode.

Also, even Mac OS X doesn't let you use full 2880x1800 unless you have a program but they programmed it so that certain elements take advantage of the full amount of pixels. But I am glad technology is headed in the right direction by increasing resolution on laptops.

I suggest doing this in Windows 7.
    • Go to control panels and choose Display. You should see a window titled Make it easier to read what's on your screen.
    • On the left choose Set custom text size (DPI).
    • Select 200% from the drop down menu that appears after "Scale to this percentage of normal size."
    • Use Windows XP style DPI scaling must not be enabled.
    • Press OK and then Apply. You will be told you need to log out of Windows for the change to take effect. When you log back in, you'll see Windows is now running at 192 DPI. Not quite Retina but as close as Windows will let you get.

FFXIV should be set to run with a Windows size of 1440x900 since it will also be effected.

Thanks, I'll definitely try it out. What resolution would I set my desktop to be though? 2880x1800?
