The reason other MMO's have this (prime example, WoW) is because you are required to have an alt if you want to experience all the classes. Unlike Final Fantasy where it is possible to play every job under one character.
Except FFXI has had this feature from the very beginning, and you can play all classes on one character from the very beginning.
The biggest reason XIV doesn't have it while XI does is the sheer amount of RMT abuse it had with the mailing system at one time, so the ability was instead taken away from us (Yes you used to be able to do it in XIV for a short time!) to do it in order to help combat that issue and make it more costly on the RMTs to move money around. Admittedly, it doesn't do much in regards to the ones with massive bot armies etc - but their goal with it was to hamper and slow one specific target group... Those who RMT with their character alone and such and not the bot armies - a deterrent basically against the "Casual RMTer" so to speak.
