Aglaia: Lion or Lioness first, Am I wrong?

So I had a very interesting Aglaia run today where I recommended we focus the Lioness first and was met with, well, basically a dogpiling telling me I'm wrong, taking the piss, etc.

I've run Aglaia more times than I want to admit in my effort to max all my jobs, and am growing tired of reaching scales or having slow runs, so maybe it's not for me to ask for that, but I am curious if I'm just understanding it wrong since they seemed flabbergasted that I even implied it was better to kill Lioness first.

So, this is my understanding of the mechanics:

Lion does AoE puddle and Lioness does a donut.

People usually mark 1 the Lion and it never made sense to me because as a melee you're forced to disengage every time they do the limit cut ability puddle/donut. (Because you are always pushed to the side where the lioness is to dodge the mechanics)

If you focus Lioness down you can always have uptime, kill her quicker and then kill the Lion before he does a singular puddle if the dps is good enough, but even if it's not good enough you only have to disengage once as apposed to twice with focusing Lion.

Sure it's only a little bit of damage but everyone wants faster runs, right?

Am I misunderstanding the mechanics? Because everyone seemed to think I was and was making fun of me lol. I'll concede if I'm wrong.

their aoes aren't going to kill you anyway if you take one, so it really doesn't matter. just focus whichever one is dying faster and don't bother respecting the mechanic.

It's a holdover from when Aglaia enemies had (relatively) higher HP pools and the followup AoEs would always go off (unless you kept the HPs very even). Hence, killing Lion first would avoid an extra unnecessary "chariot" AoE 100% of the time. Doesn't matter now, though. Your reasoning isn't exactly wrong but there's no real reason to pick one over the other since they both die very quickly.

That's true. I feel like I'm getting unessecarily hung up on faster runs and it's probably a sign that I'm doing aglaia way too much to level and should probably rest.

I don't think it matters which on you get first, as when one of them goes down, the other will just start doing all 3 types of AoE, Donut, Puddle and Half-arena.

In JP even on opening night when it released, it was literally just a free-for-all, and when people noticed one going down a bit faster, they just burned that one down. There's negligible benefit in having everyone focusing on one immediately - the mechanics aren't hard to dodge nor are they particularly deadly. Technically if nobody dies, then all times to kill should be almost identical no matter how you approach the fight.

Though I do die a little inside when I notice people using AOE instead of single target rotations lol.

It's an Alliance Raid trash, so it literally doesn't matter which dies first, as long as you focus DPS on one. That said every time I've done it (and yes, it's been MANY), people have always killed Lion first for whatever reason it might be, so I just assumed that's what everyone's used to at this point.

Poor Lion, the FF community must just hate men

People kill the Lion first because that maximizes melee uptime. It's not a major issue now since the aoe won't kill anyone, so no one has to bother to dodge out of it, but it is still the best practice.

it really doesnt matter which one you kill first I often literally just mark the first one I target

If you kill the lion first, you don't have to avoid the aoe. Lion first makes more sense.
