Pretty sure it's been said already that the current version will only shut down just before 2.0 is released to transfer all character data across. It will still remain live while beta testing of 2.0 is ongoing.
At least I think that's how it's working.

No. Game will go down in september when closed beta opens, for the thing you said.
No where has it been said thats 100% whats going to happen, theres 3 stages: Alpha, Closed-Beta, Open-Beta.
SE May keep FFXIV 1.xx running untill the Open-beta arrives which may not even be untill December/January.
They only need about "1" month at the very most to Transfer all the Character data to 2.0... If January is when it Officially Launches... then December sometime will be the final month of Version 1.0.
So no game for 8 months... Seriously?
And here everyone was expecting the game to launch this year.
On the bright side, after the game gets shut down for 1 month for transfers, we should be able to play our current characters in the beta.
Because we all get to enter it anyways.
i dont think people understand how the beta is going to work...really i dont.....
4-5 months of beta =/= all downtime
also, having your character in the beta once the transfer is done isnt nesisarily a good thing, unless you realize your data from stuff you do in it wont be saved(after all, its a beta, your supposed to be testing not trying to advance)

I think that what will happen is: We will have access to our characters in beta, and will keep the progress, because its essentially already 2.0, but its not polished enough to release to the normal audience. We however, will have no problems with the fact that there might still be some problems
5-6 months of the game being offline is quite a long time, and I will probably, please don't flame me, be in GW2 until then since I don't plan to be in beta.
