this is actualy what i think will happen too

they will run it during the CLOSED BETA, and when the open beta is nearing thats when they will want to do the data transfer and shut the 1.0 servers down.

remember, its not just a beta, its a closed and open beta, and im betting most people on these forums have no idea what the difference is

Seems as long as there's beta, there's no 1.xx

GE: Speaking of Beta, will there be downtime between current game and 2.0?

Yoshida: What’s going to happen is that after the current version is finished and storyline over, the servers will go down and the 2.0 beta will start up. We want to make sure we don’t make the same mistake as before, and want to be sure we have enough time not only for the beta test but also to get feedback from the players and leave enough time to implement that feedback. Also, keep in mind that transferring the characters to the new servers and systems could take up to a month. So that process will be running while the beta test is in place. There can’t be a launch immediately after the current servers are shut down.

GE: So the beta test and current game will not be operating simultaneously?

Yoshida: No. Because we need the time to convert the data from the current version to the new version, we can’t have people keep playing because they will keep updating their data. That doesn’t mean we are not going to work hard to make sure the servers aren’t down for a long time. We know that the community is there and want to maintain that community.

GE: How much downtime do you expect between the end of the beta test and the launch 2.0?

Yoshida: It won’t be anything like the next day, but we hope to have it be as short as possible. We need enough time to make sure everything is right and start it smoothly.

It's odd wording, but if they're taking down the severs at the start of beta to transfer character information, logically they wouldn't let us play again until 2.0 was out.

Otherwise, they're going to have to transfer the character data all over again.

Closed Beta: Its when a MMO does most of its Bug testing, so they don't really need many people, just enough to gather up all possible bugs, and Squash most of them.

Open Beta: Its where they do most of the Stress testing out for their server the most, all the while of still collecting Bug reports that may have not been seen during the closed beta testing. (usually at this phase they are minor bugs)

My question is... Who can play closed beta? Legacy members, random members, active players??
If the 1.0 servers will be closed in september-october I hope that all people that is now playing and paying (like me) can play in closed beta.
It would be a little unfair that a player who only play and pay the last month can play closed beta and see how is the new version, and other player that is still first beta in 2010, play and pay (and is a legacy member) can´t play until January.

To be honest I think they should get as much people as possible into the betas. Also I think it would be best to get the opinions of new players as well to sample, not just old or current players who already may have grown bias towards the franchise who probably will say everything is great... when truly it isn't. So we need a right mix of current players and potential/prospective players to get their hands on the betas.
